Arcades Is There Any Fun In Playing Anymore

Best Answer gemini17, 26 January 2013 - 10:08 PM

The bottom line is like all businesses, arcades are suffering in the recession we are firmly in(even though politicians would argue we are not!),as much as any other business is.

Unless the arcade is a mainstream monopoly like Nobles,Quicksilver and Teddys for example-The rest of the field quite simply just do not have the funds or resources to improve the arcades etc unlike the big names I mention-And even they have suffered casualties in recent years, especially Quicksilver.

The above relates to the recent years of recession and current climate we are locked in! And hence with little money around, less people are playing in any gaming centres.

You got to remember too Vectra in the winter period few people visit coastal towns, main factor the weather and little or no money to gambol!

If I do have a gambol, which like your self is rare now-I stick to the local arcade centres in the town-we have Warwicks here in Blackpool. As they not only pay a good percentage but they also appear to have regular players.

I avoid the sea front like the plague,as the arcades are so run down now and like the experience you just had,if I took £300 to have a punt it would be gone in less than half the time your money took to lose.

If you have local arcade close to you Vecs, then my advice would be when you want a game try them.

Avoid the coastal arcades or better still try some of the online sites,I find now I have a better game from online bingo and slots than what ive ever had from any amusement centre.

Arcades are no longer fun because they are no longer arcades. They are casinos.

This happened about the same time as the concept of the AWP went out the window, about ten years ago I think when the JPs went rapidly up from £10 to £15 to £35 and then £70, still with a 25p stake available.

Ten years ago you could take £20 to an arcade and play for an hour. Now you are lucky to get ten minutes. And it will only get worse as the last two govts are addicted to the taxes they are reaping from gambling. FOBTs are of course the crack cocaine of gambling, which is why they are proliferating in the recession.

There is no amusement in fruit machines any more, it is just gambling and that is why the fun is diminished and the arcades are dead.

Sad.

One of the most striking things for me, on modern AWPs, is how the blocks have LOWERED compared to the old £15 jackpots. On a £15 machine, you'd often encounter a block of £3... sure, there were £2 blocks, but from memory (apart from machines like Pie Factory), most had a £3 block.

Modern machines, no matter what stake, tend to have incredibly rigid £2 blocks, from one board to another, which leads to an incredibly frustrating game. This frustration used to wind up with me gambling 'angrily', and that was never a good thing as I rapidly lost track of the value of money and it became a fight between me and the machine, rather than a casual way of spending time.

Bell Fruit are probably the worst for rigid £2 blocks which can last for many spins. However the current crop of gamblers can't be that bothered due to the success of the franchise.

and also the streaks are less a typical £15jp could repeat or go all the way 4x,s for a possible £60 in one hit or a £2repeater go for a tenner 10x,s repeat you wouldn,t see that many repeats on a £25-£70 apart from rubies n diamonds £25 that used to roll a ton in on the features they go red or roll once maybe twice but as i said at the start even the modern partytimes don,t play like they used to when they 1st came out

There can't be a future for arcades, why would you bother when compared to what you can get at the press of a button on line.

Compare the payout %'s there is no comparison, and who wants to constantly be fronted with deal or no deals who've been ripped to shreds by pros etc.

I used to be big into fruities in the pub/arcade, but faced with £20 I would rather have a punt online anyday now rather than in an arcade.

I used to spend every lunchtime in arcades, not just on fruits but pinball too. No more.

Fortunately I have been burned badly both times I've tried online gambling so I have no interest as I have a negative association.

I know barcrest have decided not to make any more reeled machines to concentrate on video slots, for online and in pubs. No more vamp it up style streakers. Imagine how much it costs delivering machines to pubs, maintaining them etc when you can just put a couple of video machines in and update them over the internet.

Was in the pub yesterday and a chap put over £200 into a DOND trying to force a jp which when the megastreak was finally offered was a flat £70. Not fun

You often find that machines these days do afterplay. For example, my Club Clouseau on £100 / 10p - I once put £200 in to force out a JP, however the next £5 worth of credit gave another £90 of features (so £190 out, almost a double jackpot). The DOND clubber in the local club did back to back jackpots a week or so ago, someone else punted the crap out of it and walked away with £250, dad put a fiver in and got the easiest £250 ever.

They take forever to go through the block, but if you are forcing them you often leave a fair bit of afterplay. Always worth a tenner after a jackpot to see if a machine is still 'happy' in my opinion, although I don't play any more :)

You are right though - it's not 'fun' in the normal sense of the word, but it certainly sucked people like me in! It's intense, frustrating, angry gambling. Yay!
