Exactly what I was thinking maybe a merger or a sub section so that dads can live on. What's going to happen to the resources available on there and the layouts that are not available here if it closes indefinitely can/will Dad put such resources/layouts on here for future usage call the section Dadsfme bit n bobs!!! And what about the Brilliant dxcellent site if that's gone forever what about the layouts within there. Some of which again aren't available anywhere else, would it be possible to add those layouts to this site with pook's permission so at least the dx's and resources can be saved.
What do you think guys??

It's not up to us here the members of Fruit Emu to decide whether their sites are salvaged or not...

It is upto DAD (Andy) whether he archives the site or not, as is the same for DX'Cellent and pook (Dave).

If they wish their sites to close and everything with it - well it is up to them... our decisions have nothing to do with it.

...and in all honesty, I would say that 99% of the layouts between both sites are in the public domain anyway.

FME has come to a crux... I just hope that their will be a future for you all in the next decade, like the blast the original guys have had in the past.

A new generation of FME members are now here... and to be honest it doesn't look promising for FME in the future because of some of them.

Ok Daryl,

Yes I agree no one has right to tell anyone whether they should tell a website owner how to run their sites. I have total respect for a Sysop who spends time and money for other people with little or no thanks.

However I feel that the demise of the FME Forums is not a unique issue in anyway. Over many many years I have visited Forums and groups on a very wide range of subjects and the same pattern of events are happening as in FME. The input has waned, so to the enthusiasm, there is so much you can talk about and do on a subject. Forums are an instant access so what little resources are used up at a very fast rate. As mentioned before new technology has created a way of cloning systems using Dongles and software codes etc. which does not help the cause.

So, I feel not only is is a sad day for FME, I think it is a sad day for Forums. They are becoming a thing of the past. I can go back, probably further than most, to the days of Bulletin Boards, Midnight Lines and dedicated servers P.I. (9600 Baud Modems)  (Pre Internet). To be accepted onto a BBS and be part of a forum was a great privilege. Being part of a community with fellow members with the same interests and like thoughts.

Enough nostalgia.

Forums are now facing a new enemy. NO. not the few members you kindly call 'arseholes', but another faceless enemy.

Social Networking.

In the last 10+ years ago a whole new generation has grown up with different values/ideas. The Facebook, Twitter and torrents to some extent have far surpassed Forums. There are no Sysops, super admin , admin or Moderators telling them how to behave.

Is this progress???

Iv'e learnt so much from so many Forums in the last 25 years that I for one would be sad to see any Forum disappear into the ether forever.

R.I.P. DADsFme.

Daryl,

Sorry no I never meant YOU did M8. :) You know what I mean.

It was a serious statement of where Forums are now and what competition they face. You can't blame the few for the decline of FME. If people were really interested they would be knocking out DX's every other day regardless of any issues, but they are not.

Instead of blaming people (which does the cause more damage), we should be looking at more positive ways of encouraging people and new talent into FME.

Just saying it was so good in the olden days, why isn't it now, is not going help the cause. Personally (my opinion) I think would be layout creators feel intimidated. They have no experience and feel they are not worthy. Having said that there are members on FME who go the extra mile to help newbies. However, spending many many hours on a DX and then get flamed is not a good experience. There is a lot to live up to with our top Dx'ers.

Perhaps would be layout Creators don't think it's worth the effort.

Shame, because these are the people needed to keep FME alive!!!!

I would love to carry the torch and create layouts but it's a lot of effort to learn which resources will run and are frowned upon when we re-create a layout previously dx'ed by a layout creator because it's deemed stepping on their toe's. I think their is forum threads outlawing people using other peoples resources without permission like classics and any type of graphic so doesn't give many the chance to learn.

Someone should open a dxing school and create a learn base dx which new layout creators can use to learn the skills.. but I don't think their is a shortage of layout creators only resource gatherers & emulator coders

In all honesty, I've seen and heard that much in FME over the years, and been flamed too... you just 'get used to it'.

I'm afraid a few newer members don't seem to accept that - which is a pity because that is how FME has, or hasn't worked perhaps - this past decade or so. Criticism on the forums has always been one of the key ingredients in getting the top layout creators to where they are now... they had to start at the beginning too you know - a DX in a week, which when the tools were first released by Wizard to allow this, is why some of the DXes from the beginning are of such low quality... it was the actual fact that you could play the fruit machine as it looked in the arcade was all that mattered. Now, with better release tools within MFME 3 and MFME 2.1, with the advent of the BFMulator, JPeMu Emulator and the rather awkward Amber emulator released, and with much better graphics and design tools available as software on your computer, the kind of standard in the past for DX artwork doesn't really cut any mustard with me.

I, as an empassioned member of FME will only be here for so long (thank f**k I can hear some of you cry with glee ;)) but I feel as if I am a dying breed from the 'old guard' FME membership... and I don't like the look of the future it's taking very much at all.

I can totally understand why Andy is walking clearly from his site, and the same for Dave too - we don't feel like we 'belong' anymore to how FME is now - perhaps our standards are too high to accept what is released at times - but that is how FME always was... and more to the point will continue to be - as long as I have my input still available! :)

There was no question of standards being too high, but more of the combined effect of forums declining in general and the lack of resources. Sadly I feel the day of the forums are numbered and being overtaken by Social Networking. It's not just FME, but a much greater picture. 10 years on the internet is a life time these days!!!!

in 10-15years time the internet will be old hat the next generation of online will be  whatever that will be. just look at the way mobile phones have gone in the last 10yrs

As for layout creating the problem is not the standard of layout, although mine will take a lot of catching up to be anywhere near as good as the top guys but thats a different subject been there got the t shirt...

It's all to do with resources we can,t get or find any, yes we get the odd exception like hey presto and spellbound, luxor casino ace,s top flight but they,re all classic,s due to no images good enough for dx,ing and yes there is the odd New dx still to be found bellfruit,s chain reaction, las vegas casino, even my latest fortune wheel classic/wdx and carribean cash but the artwork for dx,s it to far and wide for regular new dx releases unfortunatly things have dried up. It will happen with the new upcoming epoch emu a big rush for a year or two then bang its dried up no more resources until someone cracks MPU5/6  and we see the £35/70 and even the £500ers emulated things will be as they are

this site along with dads and the mecca and dxcellent is all about archiving the classic slots of a by gone era unfortunatly the times almost coming where the archives now complete

The more I do today, The less I do tomorrow.
Fme is alive and screaming into the 21st century!
Enjoy FME and Happy Gaming!!!!

Yes Vecs,

There are an finite amount of Dx's you can make with the finite amount of resources. Combined with the slow decline in forums and enthusiasm to promote the cause and the hark back to the 'Good Old Days' all the time. We have all come to a point where FME has stalled. No blame is being thrown at anyone at all, no way. 2 well respected FME sites are/could be lost forever!!! Such a shame of all the hard work and passion that has been inputted over the years could be forgotten forever. I find that quite upsetting Honestly!!!

Edit:- Soon all we will have are the archives and very little else.

Just to be clear, I have never stated that I'm closing my site or walking away. Yes I've been quiet and passive of late, and have explained the reasons why to people when asked. My site is down due to DNS issues with fruit-emu where my site is hosted, sadly I cannot seem to rectify this at the moment, but it's down for no other reason than that. Don't read into something that isn't there.

I don't post here very much, and even less on DADs as most know I'm on the mecca mostly due to collecting the real machines.  However, if it wasn't for emulation I wouldn't be playing the real ones as my first insight was on a DVD from someone decades ago! Then I discovered Dxellent...  the rest is history.

So sadly DADs is to close but perhaps there'll be something positive and it'll give people a good kick up the arse and make people appreciate what they have before another collection of resources is gone like a fart in the wind

Thanks Dad  :notworthy:

i was a sysop for many years who(ok a 33.6k modem now) ran an amiga BBS until i was hacked by the fear factory - then i decided to close up shop.

Much as it pains me to say this as one of the staff members at DAD's, all good things must come to an end unfortunately, and DAD's is no exception to this.

I have myself been looking in to continuing the running of DAD's (Being as one of it's current members of staff), but after discussion with a number of connected persons, I've decided this would not be wise, in fear of turning the place in to another Fruit Forums..... as a lasting legacy, that is the last thing I would want to see happen to the place.

I do however want to take this opportunity to thank DAD and the rest of the staff past and present, for all of their hard work and commitment over the years and standing by the place throughout the turmoil's of FME in general.

Also note, that this means the assocated #mpu34 IRC chat room will become redundant when the site closes (The one I run on the Chatabout IRC network), unless anyone can think of a use for it? (I may ask Dave  Mr P's about this)

My closing words on this..... been great knowing you guys and have made many friends via the site, and hope you will continue to see you around sites like FE, Mecca, Jackpotty, and Reel fruits (Mr P's), and to stay in touch, also hoping that DAD will at least stay here at FE

I know I will be about for years to come (Mostly at The Mecca), and you will not be shot of me yet by a long shot :D

Regards,

Mark

(Staff @ DAD's FME)

PS...... any jobs going on staff here at all? ;)
