Hi all,

I recently bought a Barcrest Video Star (the second one of these I've had over the years - I really like the Texas Tea game!).  Anyway, despite it being advertised in full working order and good condition, it had a few problems.

These included being very very loud (which I have now adjusted using a refill key) and a £1 hopper alarm, which I resolved by cleaning the optos in the £1 hopper.

The only issue I would like to resolve now is that the note acceptor doesnt seem to work, despite being told it did.  When you go to put a note in the acceptor, nothing happens.  It does not try and take the note at all.

On other machines I've had, I'm sure I remember hearing the note acceptor "whirring" when you switch the machine on, but it does not happen on this machine.

Could anyone let me know where to start?  Do I need to "switch it on" somehow, or let the machine know it is connected?  It looks complete when I had a look at it.

Unfortunately despite being told the machine came with a manual, the manual was for another machine!  The only one I could find was a generic MPU5 manual, but this makes no mention of note acceptors etc.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated!

Cheers, Mark.

Does the note acceptor light up when the machine is turned on?

Hi, I dont think there are any lights on the outside of the note acceptor, however I am sure there are internal lights visible on the note acceptor when the coin door is open.

I will try and get some pics if this would help.

Cheers,

Mark

Silly question but have you checked that it's plugged in? Might be worth checking that it's firmly seated too.

Yeah my first thoughts were that its just not plugged in, or that there is a break in the connection somewhere. Some photos will help I think.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies.  I had a closer look last night, and it certainly looks like it is plugged in and the "STATUS" light on the inside of the mech is blnking red.

It is a N7 mech.

I thought I fixed it myself as there are 4 dip switches on the top of the machine and I switched DIP2 to "RUN", which has made the flashing arrow on the outside of the machine light up, so it now looks from the outside like it is ready to take notes.

However, there is still no whirring on switch on, and when you put a note in nothing happens still.

I will try and take some pictures tonight, but if anyone has any more thoughts in the meantime please let me know :)

Cheers, Mark

If its registering with the machine and the ready lights are working then I would say its a hardware fault.. like the motor has stopped registering, as I believe dip switch 1 and 2 are note acceptance rate (high/low security) and dip switch 3 and 4 are for selecting how it communicates with the machine (cctalk/serial etc).
thanks to my pal chasnbons.. there is a nv7 manual availiable in tge manual forum at www.arcademachinehelp.co.uk

Good luck

Thanks for that, I am also beginning to think the note acceptor might be faulty.  I have note tried adjusting switched 3 and 4 (how it communicates with the machine) but I might try that in case the current settings are not correct.

If it is a faulty mech, any idea how much a replacement would be?  Second hand is fine, and not bothered about being high security etc as it is only for home use.  Needs to take current notes though :)

Cheers, Mark.

Thanks Nick,

Out of interest, would a NV4/9 fit, or do you know it it would have to be a NV7?  I might be able to get a NV4/9 if that would do the job!

Cheers,

Mark

An NV4 or NV9 would work, but you'll need a different wiring loom.

i used to have this bag of shit machine in the arcade. make sure its topped up with coins. either use the refill key and press hopper top up, or dump the £125/£250 coins twice (old leisure link trick).

Thanks guys, I've got it working now - I downloaded the manual and the red blinking light indicated a problem.  I removed the mech from the machine to clean it, and noticed that the cable linking the top and bottom half was missing!  I found this in the bottom of the machine, connected it up, and hey-presto, it is now working ;)

The only slightly odd thing is that it gives the entire amount of the note as change - eg, £10 note in gives 10 x £1 coins, not £2 credits and £8 coins.  This doesn't really matter, but if anyone knows how to change this please let me know.

What does dumping the float twice do?

I like this machine - it is the second Videostars I've had, the first one went faulty on me.  I loved playing Texas Tea on the slot machines in Las Vegas so it has a sentimental value, plus I only have limited space so a machine that plays 4 games is better for me that a machine that only plays the one game :)

Cheers, Mark.
