Just how hard is it to write the code to create your own fruit machine akin to the ones that the masters (you guys) emulate? Chances are it is way too advanced for my feeble mind, but I was just curious as to the amount of work required.
Keep up the great work guys.

Would you mean creating a layout or an Emulator?

The actual creation of the software (ROM) to run a machine. Something to make the lights blink, reels spin, and all that

The actual roms are from the machines themselves...so you could not create a rom.......you can create a layout.classic or a dx.which is grafix overlay

I'd say you need a professional programmer to answer this one really.
as Madman said, the roms we get are literally 'lifted' straight off the fruit machine and converted for our use.
but Obviously someone had to write the original coding for it.
the reels would be pattern based relating to payout percentage and money in (as totally random reels means a 1 in 16 x 1 in 16 x 1 in 16 chance of spinning in the same symbol (assuming you have 16 different symbols lol)
But then with total randomness you could get Jackpot sin in 7 times in a row, so there needs to be some control over the outcome.
As for the features, again you'd need to speak to a professional (which I am NOOOOOOOOOO where near lol)
hope this helps (or did it just start more questions lol)

A new machine from scratch takes about 8 weeks to program. Thats just for a specific machines code, it assumes you already have reel driving routines, hopper routines, lamp flashing routines and so on. To write a technology from scratch, your talking serious time and money.

You have to working harder to program a fruit machine hardware.
It is a low level programming, long time consuming.
It is much easier to simulate a fruit machine on your PC. You can use Flash or something like this. I spent 2 days to simulate a very simple jackpot machine on VRML.

Thanks for the informatio guys. I wasn't sure how much time each new machine really got before it was placed into the pubs. Now, I have a better understanding of the work designers do.

You could create your own Hybrid DX.
The Psycho Cash Beast layout, on this very, site is actually the Bangin Away romset just with all the BA graphics taken out and replaced with PCB graphics.
I don't see any reason why you couldn't create a new set of graphics yourself and use the roms from another machine.
IIRC there was one such layout released called Oblivion (I think) where the graphics were all custom made for an imaginary machine but used an existing romset.
Obviously the sounds and how it actually plays will be governed by the roms.
Am I making any sense here?

Do you mean 'Fruit Vortex' - based on the Supafruits ROMS?
Excellent graphics, makes you realise how easy it is for manufacturers to just swap glasses, i.e Monty Python and Neptunes Treasure - identical machines, except for different graphics and different sounds. As the pictures below show however, they are exactly the same machine.
However, as stated above, the question that was asked was along the lines of 'how do they create fruit machine ROMs', rather than how to use already created ROMs with the emulator
