A message from Pete-W, the administrator stating that the main benefactor, which I believe to be Rogue, is moving on, and that if Fruit Forums isn't supported in one way or another, it looks like it will be heading into the Internet ether with DAD's...

This is a situation that is NOT unique to the FME Community. I frequent many forums etc. on varied subjects. Many of them have the same problems. Funding.

Server space is now at a premium as we have witnessed from Duplu's comments.

Over the years I have seen too many good sites disappear, if FME went, well that would be one too many!!!

i dont know the ins and out of fruit-forums, but the fact  there is less that 1% talk of either machines or fme in general makes it a bad choice of fruit related forums.

PC world however may wish donate.....

In a nutshell my fme story started at fruit-emu. It then migrated for a few years to mainly fruit forums, and then came back over to mainly fruit-emu.. (chat wise).

The trouble with fruit forums is that it went downhill a long time ago. It changed some of its policies.. it changed its owner.. and i believe a few mods were making a name for themselves.. I honestly cannot remember the ins and outs.. but nearly every thread turned into a flame war.

Tbh, I wouldnt mind taking over a forum like that to see if i can turn it around and use the existing forum/members/google rank to create a spares and fixing forum as arcadespares and arcademachinehelp are slow.. but its steady i suppose

Fruit Forums, isn't going anywhere, enough people to put in to keep it going.

It may not have much FME talk, but it's a place where if MPU6 or all the DOND machines were released, would be the only place likely to have the balls to host them. Just like it was the only place originally to have the balls to host 9.4 and 10.1 and associated DX's.

I think some of us still are, but many of us are now a lot older, so the discussion is pretty tame nowadays.

FF has been blamed for a lot of what has/went wrong with FME, but without it FME wouldn't have been half as much fun and I'm sure many layouts still wouldn't be available to play. Ultimately the fact it was used by many as a way of getting stuff out there, has been it's downfall.

I think, at the end of the day, looking back at our history from what I can remember clearly, fruit machine emulation couldn't have carried on without it in its existing form today.

If 9.4/10.1 hadn't been leaked there, and it hadn't hosted it originally so as members could get their hands on it - there wouldn't have been a future left.

Wizard, most certainly wasn't ever going to release another version of MFME and so therefore, Guitar, from all those years ago, and killcrazy wouldn't really have had an existing member base to carry on.

The newer versions of the leaked MFME has brought a younger generation in, with the ability to play, albeit crudely, MPU5 and Scorpion 4 and so therefore FME has managed to evolve as it were, but if that leak had never had taken place, I certainly feel that the scene would now have been just another internet footnote phenomenon... lost in the ether!

Fruit Forums always puts me in mind of 'Marmite' - you either love it or hate!

I love it - and Marmite too! :)

FME has always been free - there will never be a charge for anything related to FME as it is all free source - only the scumbags that sell the layout creators works on that site charge, and that is most definitely not, and never will be endorsed within the FME community

OLDER and TAME are two words I don't use together!!!! if anything i'm anything but. According to Mrs R.D.P. I moan and complain about everything these days!!! and why not???? Don't get me started on Tescos and British Gas.LOL. :biglaugh:

Lets face it. We would all be seriously upset if FME finished, a community that has been going for so long and has the greatest respect from it's members.

This is the only bit I disagree with, I believe he was willing to release again. After things had settled down, he was indicating a further release, as per posts on the mecca.

But once the MAME lot got involved and insist on the code, he was finished. It of course was generally suggested that they were tipped off, by member/s of another forum than FF. Of course if the person/s plan was that it would make him say, sod it and release everything he had done, it backfired big time. Instead of him saying sod it and releasing everything he had, he shut up shop.

So FF hasn't been the complete cause of everything bad in FME.

The thing that killed FF, was the total mismanagement of the place when it left Alex's hands, and permitting a select few persons in FME, free reign over the place, and now what we see today, is NOTHING apart from the odd snippet (Noting the few DX's posted as a token gesture) relating to FME or machines in general.

As nails put it..... stand more chance of LONG TERM (Please note this!) sponsorship with Currys PC World, than donations from members.

Yes, you will get donations from a certain few members, but their only interest in all of this, is to keep their "soapbox", and not much if anything relating to FME, and certanaly can not be relied upon for long term support.

Reason why DAD's is going, is we don't wish to end up like FF, and end up like a glorified computer forum..... that is the difference.

Certanaly this year (Around August), where I normally donate to DAD's, will this year be sending my donation to Alan, here at Fruit-Emu.

Anyone got me the link for FE's donation page (Ideally PayPal)?

I have to take issue with that post. Fruit Forums is such a quiet, chilled out place these days and I cannot think of ANYTHING which could be construed as 'soapbox' worthy having taken place there for a good number of years now. In fact I'd go as far as to say there's been more 'soapboxing' on DADs than there has been on Fruit-Emu or the Mecca.

Have you not considered that it's members might be willing to donate because they like their nice little corner of the internet, rather than having a malicious intent behind it?

Yes there's *very* little FME discussion @ Fruit Forums these days - nobody will argue about that. It's very quiet there too, nobody will argue about that either.

The running costs have been looked at and are so insignificant really that I don't think financial support is an issue.

Take issue all you like, but you will NOT change either myself or many other's minds any time soon over this.

As said earlier, things was fine enough under Alex's stewardship, but due to personal circumstances (Which from what he mentioned to a few of us in confidence, was not pleasant at all, and also involved the risk of him loosing his job), he had no choice but to hand FF over to Rouge, and that is when the real rot began to set in.

I like many long term FME members, are bitterly angry at Rouge, with the way he destroyed the place that we considered the ancestral home of FME, and allowed it's use by a select few to act as a "Soapbox".

... and you are *honestly* saying that you don't feel like DADs was ever used as a soapbox? There were several members there who (for whatever reason) wouldn't post on here, or elsewhere, but were happy to viciously attack others in their protected forum *long* after Fruit Forums had taken on it's current (much smaller, calmer) form.

If you can't agree with that, then I'm afraid you've been viewing a completely different DADs FME to the one I was lurking on for the past 5 years.

I think it's a shame that the well being and also the demise of FME ultimately came down to just a couple of people. I thought it was incredibly odd at the height of FME that the community were threatened with no more emulators if someone farted, if someone looked at someone funny, if someone had an opinion, and if someone said something unsavoury. It was almost as if those who had the gift to create the emulators just couldn't be arsed. Or couldn't be bothered or had simply got stuck and couldn't push further but couldn't come clean and admit that. In the end, It probably boiled down to those creating the emulators, not receiving any benefit. Lack of motivation. So why carry on... And it was easier to look for some sort of scapegoat to blame rather than just say 'I ain't got the time' or 'i can't be arsed'.

Fruit Forums didn't break FME. Yeah it pushed the boundaries of the ethics imposed by those who could create the emulators. But ironically, those that pissed off the emulator creators were the very same people who they called friends. They were betrayed by their buddies ultimately. And we all suffered because of that. Chris Wren who created MFME brought us a decent piece of software but reading between the lines, over the years, it became a hindrance to him causing him more grief than pleasure. Even when he released a new emulator, he got plenty of appreciation and thanks, but his emulator release threat would go dead within just a few days. Hardly the greatest motivation for months if not years of work. So he probably had his reasons for walking away from the community. Wasn't the community something that overwhelmed him and he had no desire for? I'm sure he and his closest friends have several versions of MFME that we can only dream of. Ones running all the latest games.

As for Fruit Forums, that place didn't break FME. It just stood up and decided it wasn't taking any shit from anybody. Even the creators of the emulators. That place was full of passion and sadly, as wearecity says, those who were part of FME at it's height have got older. They've moved on. We pop in from time to time still clutching to the hope that by some miracle, something new comes along that invigorates the FME scene once more. I'd still be involved if FME was still moving forward but theres only so many Nickelodeon and Crazy Pays layouts a person can make before he gets bored lol.

That's your opinion end of the day and you are entitled to it, however much wrong / right it is, but there is no denying that since Rouge took control, is when FF started to die.

Least I am not trying to deflect from the issue of FF closing by blaming or having a stab at another FME forum.
