Windows Live Messenger was retired and replaced by Skype in early 2013 and their hotmail service replaced by outlook which I actually prefer but I've not downloaded Skype as I no longer use a instant messenger service apart from Whatsapp on my mobile. WLM Service is still available in China. I'm not sure why you're unable to sign in but a brief look on the internet shows other users having the same problem

Yeah, when hotmail when to outlook they also changed msn messenger to skype which is a shame. I've always hated skype, but windows messenger was a lot more tolerable. Now, you automatically connect to Skype when you check out email...I've never had so man random spam calls...

When logging in to the new messenger don't forget to pick the option for messenger not skype as your windows live account won't work if you pick to log in with skype.
I have a portable version of MSN I use it is from portable apps which is open source software.
Tommy you'll need to go to the portable apps site as i'm having problems with the uploading it lets me select it but when it gets to the end it comes up with ne file selected.

Weird, they are boosting Skype so much now. However, the other day I tried to play a game on Steam and ended up having to register is with MSN/Windows Live. It's odd that they would push out one thing for one company while forcing their original company onto anyone who actually just wants to play a game.
