Every time i log on to the net i get a window pop up "A newer version is available. You must install the newer version in order to continue.Would you like to do this now?"
The options include "Whats new" but when i click on this it directs me to the microsoft site "Were sorry but there is no microsoft.com web page that matches your entry".
This seems to be a bit dodgy to me.
Has anyone else on msn had this message?.

Yes, i have had that a few time, it is just msn trying to push the newest version on you. Unfortunately i don't think there is a way around it so you will have to go to this link and get the file http://messenger.msn....aspx?mkt=en-gb

the only way around it is to disable windows messenger totally....
control panel --> administrative tools --> services, scroll down to messenger and right click --> stop, right click again --> properties --> general tab --> startup type --> disabled.
the other thing you can do is boot into safe mode, navigate to windows messenger in your root drive/program files and rename the main folder 'messengerOFF'
that should nuke it for you

I'm using msn version 7 which is pretty cool.
I wouldnt go as far as disabling the windows messenger service as it makes no difference to msn.

Last time MSN -FORCED- an update was on users with MSN 4.7 or below, and that was due to some security stuff. From memory it was actually due to flooders, that kind of thing - nothing disasterous, but MSN changed the EULA to include 'no modificiations to the MSN program code, front-ends to be used' or something similar :S

Glad to read this post, as I've been fretting this evening after running this upgrade. Weirdest thing was the fact it rebooted the PC without warning, something I wouldn't expect from M'soft.

I would expect microsoft to do anything they pleased
They can put updates for everything windows based on the internet, and god knows what else they include to spy on us.
(A bit paranoid me thinks  )

Not sure about where on which forum I read this, but apparently the latest update for Windows Media Player [10?] allows them to spy a little more than usual
