If the first reel's spinning but you're getting this error it will probably mean the opto isn't being read correctly (possibly a bad connection/damaged opto tab/dirty or broken opto sensor). Has the reel been banged/damaged in any way?

I'm not clued up on EPOCH, but if you've swapped reels and are still getting the error using the Reel 1 loom, then I'd suggest it's either a faulty loom (only if you were using the same wiring for all reels you tested), a separate reel driver board (does EPOCH use a reel driver board?) - or a faulty mainboard - BUT I would wait for someone more clued up to arrive.
As a matter of interest, check the EPOCH mainboard and if there is ANY evidence of a leaky battery (furry white / green deposits, discolouration, rust), get the board out of the machine, remove the battery, and wash the board in vinegar (normal household vinegar is fine), then rinse in warm water and dry it for a few days (airing cupboard?).
IF UNSURE, ASK AND FEEL FREE TO POST PHOTOS
There's no end of faulty Maygay EPOCH based machines with faults caused by leaky batteries, and spares are getting more scarce. Errors will vary depending on which parts of the board are damaged.

^^ Yup Epoch uses a reel driver board (comes in 2 versions - 4 & 6 reels)
Sorry didn't read that you'd tried all reels in position 1
It's probably a bad driver board in that case (but with Epoch you can never be sure unfortunately) - are there any bent/broken pins on the reel driver board for the reel 1 connector?

its either a board fault or it may be a loose wire going from the board to the reel

thankyou for your help and advice. Having disconnected all the reels from the reel driver board i still get the same error message with nothing connected????. I have green lights on and no red ones anywhere.

According to the BACTA test stuff, 2.X always means reel error, and 1 is the first reel. You could probably remove the reel board altogether and you'd still get error 2.1 as the machine looks for the reels in order, and when it doesn't get a valid response from reel 1, it stops and gives 2.1
Without seeing the machine in person, it's hard to be sure. I'd be leaning towards a reel driver board being at fault, based on what you have said - but like I say without seeing the actual machine it's hard to diagnose things like this. The mainboards are a common fault on these, especially with battery leakages.
Fruit machines can be odd beasts - one of my machines was being a pain in the arse, turned out it wasn't getting a 5V supply from the PSU because a wire was loose - I was getting ready to throw the machine in a skip at that point
There is a 4 reel driver board on eBay here : http://www.ebay.co.u...=item19e35fed61
... but obviously if it turns out that you still have a fault with the PSU or mainboard, you would expect the same error even after replacing that board.
The mainboard and PSU are the rarest / most expensive bits to replace.

Yea I'd agree try replacing the reel driver board first and see if that makes a difference. It think it's unlikely to be an issue with the MPU as checking the reels is quite far in to the boot process (it'd most likely fail before this stage or at least behave inconsistently if this was on the way out).
It could also be a problem with the PSU but hopefully not

yes you will get that message as no plugs are in the board
check the reel driver board also like i said before with the machine off meter the wires from plug to plug

Is the little tab that goes through the opto still attached to the reel? And is the opto clean?
