Just had a good look at a mpu 5 board, as used in barcest etc machines,
it appears to have either a input or output for a microphone on the board (clearly labelled mic on the audio part) and also what looks to me like a condenser microphone built onto the board, right next to the where it also says mic.

Any ideas what this is for? Why would a fruity need a mic?

ITs not the speaker connection, as thats labelled seperately.

Hey for all I know, it could easily be used by a corrupt programmer to gain an advantage over other players......... Thats assuming its a mic that is read by the board, no shematics so dont know what its for....

I know that the old BFM Scorp2 machines had a microphone capability - take Round the Town as an example - depending on how you sang, you got more/less money on the 'Karaoke' feature

the little metal thing looks to me to be a condenser microphone,
very sensitive type of mic that can pic up conversations in a room from
a distance, often used in dictation machines, bugs, and other devices where a small, but efficient mic is needed to cover a large area......

Those appear to just be the pin labels, although it would make me think that since it is designed to support microphones, that at least 1 MPU5 machine would use them?

Its got a pin labelled, but also above is a component also labelled mic, the small metal one, with the black foam looking top, next to the caps (its on the left) that looks exactly like a condenser mic, and it has mic next to it (so its on the board twice, one for the pin, one for the component)

Never come across a machine that uses one yet from barcrest/vivid/red etc but who knows what it could be used for....

Schematic would be useful....

I can see the future now, people will be selling ebooks on ebay "secret phrases to speak to the machine to win jackpots" or people selling dog whistles claiming they are designed by the manufacturers to empty the machines.........

Its probably a feature for "future" use, but as no one seems to know what its for, its easy to get paranoid over what it could be used for......

Back in the mid to late 1980's project coin used a speaker/ mic to monitor the background sound levels, then automatically adjust the machines volume. It didnt work very well, thats why it was discontinued.

NOBODY ever sang in to the mic though - they just hit it as hard as possible with a pound coin - did the trick !

There is a simple answer to this. If a mike is fitted the machine measures the sound level around itself and automatically adjusts the speaker volume to match. For example if its very noisey the volume of the machine will be higher than if its quiet

Are you sure? Doesn't affect my Spiker MPU5 machine like that, it stays at the volume level set with the refill key :S

I don't believe I've seen or played an MPU5 machine using the auto volume level adjustment, but I can see why it might be useful

It never gets used, with a lost of pubs having the sound off, this would drive them mad! still, if its there u could use it, and if it wasnt we never could....

if i remember the mic is a part of the reset sentivity which the mpu4 had as a verable pot on the mpu the scorp 2 mic was a part of the feature around the town was great in the pub on friday with the disco`s speakers were next to the machine
