Hi i like this site but have no spare cash not a penny sorry but if i had some i would donate for sure , my question is this why is the amount so high ?

Is it just for server costs ?

or does it incorporate a lot more ?

like you are asking for 250£ is this for a year or a month or what ?

The only donation amount of £250 I know of is the collection that is currently open following the death of a well liked member of the forum.  I suspect that the software needed an amount in order to allow the donation facility to be established and Duplu just chose £250 as a random amount.  It isn't that the donations were being targetted to purchase anything specific; it was "just" a collection that will be given over to a worthwhile cause in the near future, probably related to Neil's condition.

Hopefully Daryl or another of the admins will be on later and can confirm / correct this message as necessary.

I'm sure it'll cost duplu alot more than £250 on hosting costs.

As barcrest said the £250 donation is for Thunderstorm and not for hosting costs.

Hosting costs are currently in the region of £800 a year.  This doesn't include any software maintenance costs or extras.

I'm pretty sure Duplu knows what he is doing. Thanks for proving that a leopard can't change it's spots.

Sorry but real life has taken over, hence my late reply.

Running a website isn't always about specs but about service and how a company reacts to problems.  Your $5 server is going to be shutdown in a heartbeat if you over step the mark on resources as we have had done to us a number of times before getting a dedicated server.  Bare in mind that the FE server also runs another 12 web sites as well, mostly for nothing.  We use a ton of processor power (being a PHP/MySQL website) and also a ton of bandwidth.

Actually about £66 per month is pretty good for a dedicated server. We'd struggle to put that together with the required bandwidth (my company offers this sort of service - don't worry I'm not touting for this business),

That said PM's deal also sounds decent - a bit too decent in fact. If the IPs are UK based, I can only assume there's some sort of sharing of the server or that the IP is tunnelled back to the UK. That said, PM, I'd be interested in the details. 70GB storage, of course, is a tad light :).

As Duplu says, it's not just the spec but the support, uptime guarantees and general attitude of the hosting company that makes the difference. I can't imagine that $60 per year is a service that's got much in the way of resiliency in it!

Thing is, most here don't take too kindly to your quite agressive and pushy attertude, hence why you are being faced with a brick wall.

It could very well be you have a good price here for the service, but when you talk to someone with a crappy attertude, it's quite understandable you would NOT want to deal with that person, and would go elsewhere.

Bit like the difference between geting internet access through say Griffin Internet (A very well known local buisness type ISP based in Derby), and TalkTalk....... one although you do pay a bit for the service, you get fantastic support at one place, where as the other is cheap as chips, but the support is absolutaly crap!

Also let's face it, you don't have all that great a rep on these forums anyway!

I don't have a penny to donate and I've never contributed to the site otherwise, but let me just wade in and criticise the way the site is run.

I'm sure you can copy and paste yet another dumb internet article for us, this time on the price-fixing conspiracy behind high hosting costs.
