3.4k per second is ok for dialup. The maximum is about 4, maybe 5k if you are very lucky.
Consider though, that Broadband is available... I have 8mb broadband (which is pretty rare I suppose), and can download about 800k a second.
You could always get 0.5meg broadband, which will give you about 50k a second download.
Thats pretty useable!

How much are you paying priest?
Wanadoo offer 1MB broadband 2GIG limit a month tho, (not monitored tho as I download about 5 gig a month)
for £17.99
I upgraded simply cause I was paying £14.99 for dial up
wouldn't go back now lol

If you've never experienced ADSL it would be quite easy to not survive on 56k, as you plan for it to take 5 minutes to open a flash animation, you put the kettle on, e.t.c.
I have to admit, when I lost my broadband connection for a couple of days last year [they emailed a redundant account to tell me my credit card number had changed and I was being cut off ], being on 56k was absolute hell

I've mentioned this before DaemonX....I've overrun my limit loads of times but nothing has ever happened. Love it!!!

ive got a the 500k NTL broadband to which they top it upto 750k for free, and to be honest i dont use it, and was happy wit the original 150k.. even thats now 300k ?!?
8mb? what the hell you want that for? unless your downloading like no tommorow, or have a MOH spearhead server running, what do you do with it? if you hit a sever that is running at 150,300 or 500k, your downloads wont improve??

You'll find some people here have 'tester' lines for BT etc (hence the stupidly fast lines [damn you people lol])

8MB is currently available from Bulldogdsl and a few other places. Mine hits speeds of about 850k - 900k a second, which is great when im surfing and the mrs is also surfing!
I dont download much though, so the speed is, generally speaking, a total waste on me!
Lovely to have though, and since I was the very last person I know to have been able to get broadband, I rather think I deserve it
