Now that the layouts are done it is time to tackle the many 100s of roms I've been given and/or gathered/leeched over the past couple of years.

I would be grateful if anyone can recognise any (some are obvious I know) in these pictures.  Name and manufacturer (not tech) would be great.  Thanks.

I will not be able to make the dat accurate without this help. I will post more pictures when most of these are done.

Quite a lot of those came from MAME by the looks of things, so you'll be able to get the game's names/manufacturers from the latest MAME list.  Or you could grab the latest MAME and type in the rom names, but that would be a pain I would imagine.

The ones starting with the following are in MAME:

ad4

ad5

ec_

m4

sc4

sc5

So, the first one in the picture you attached named 'ad4skill', is Skill Dice (BFM).

EDITED TO ADD MAME LIST:  Here's a page with the list of all MAME drivers on it.  You should be able to get a lot of the roms identified from it.

Crud.... yeah that is going to be a pain but if it's the only way then it's the only way.  Is there a quick way to do it or do I have to load them all into MAME?  That would be a pain because I would have to zip them all up, load them in MAME, type the name, unzipped them put them into my format and then zip them back into a FME type zip........ arrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

What are you like. :D

No need to load any roms, mate.  You can either download MAMEUI32/64, and type in the rom name and see what the machine is, or you could look in the MAME drivers link I provided and match up the rom names there.  Not as daunting as it sounds, really.

The rom names on MAMEUI will show up in the 'All Games', or 'Mechanical' tab.  It shows as 'Available' on mine because the roms are in the folder obviously.

Just add the rom code to the end of game. EG sc4cblasa would become http://www.mamedb.com/game/sc4cblasa

You got all the folders there so just a case of copy/pasting :)

All the roms from the last fme rom-dat you did were sorted and added to MAME, mate.  I think the last rom dat you did was 'Fruit Machine Roms (20120510)'.  That's the last one I have.

Not sure if you are aware or not but if you open a ROM with wordpad you should be able to see any text in the ROM reasonably clearly.

For instance, this is the result of loading "The Big Match" ROMs into wordpad.

Edited to add: Whatever you do, dont save the file once in wordpad, you'll screw the ROM up big time.

Yeah.  BWB are normally very helpful when you need to find out the machine's name.  They also display dip switch settings sometimes.  Other techs are very hit, and miss.  The JPM SRU roms available will be almost impossible to identify though.

SRU ROMs will likely be a problem to identify the machine, but being 1k roms they are fairly recognisable as SRU.

I'm sure some sort or ROM analysis tool could be made to try and auto identify ROMs. System83, 85, Scorp1, Scorp2 are data scrambled, but if you descramble them you get a decent amount of info. Similarly MPU4 Crystal games are data scrambled.

A tool which would try all the known methods of scrambling and then try to identify key bits of text to auto identify would be pretty handy.

There were several Monopoly games which were basically reskinned DOND games, is there no chance that is what happened here? For example there is Monopoly Hot Property (Mazooma / QPS?), Monopoly Boom or Bust, Monopoly Reel Estate, Monopoly Millionaires Row, Monopoly Millionaire, Monopoly Millionaire Diamond Edition, and Monopoly Double Money which are all Bell Fruit IIRC, and pretty sure they are all clones of existing DOND machines.

Can you give me a list of errors, mate?  I can get an old copy of MAME and see what is written on the alpha display to confirm if they're named incorrectly.  You can get past the security/pay unit errors on MAME to check.
