well, kinda was true but it turns out it was the red on/off switch at the back giving a bad connection - hence the reset and the machine clearing via the tamper option.
a bit of wd40 of the switch and a wipe and all hunky dory.

ive got a red hot x that shows error code 48 on startup and wont clear. fine in door open mode.
do I have to clear the ram or something ?

that's the on/off alarm - see below 
"On/Off Tamper Alarm...An audible alarm sounds for 10 seconds then silent for up to 2 minutes. To clear this alarm keep the machine closed and switched on for 10 minutes to erase recorded resets."
