It isn't, and thats why 3 of my local pubs can no longer support machines.

You are looking at :

£780 a year for a license, and around
£35 per week for a machine of say 3 years old.

Not surprising that several of the landlords I've talked too have said they really would consider buying a machine and not getting the license :o

Not 100 percent sure about this, but I think I recall that you cant supply machines to a pub (or anyone else) for real useage, unless you have a licence, which if I recall is pretty expensive....

The whole thing seems odd to me, all these licences, high costs etc, but no real policing at all.......

Also, Im sure reading somewhere that travelling gypsies etc dont need a licence... If thats true then doesnt that say a lot about this country...

Pay taxes, settle down, abide by laws etc, pay through the nose.
Move around, rip people off, dont pay taxes etc, no licence.....

Weird world.

i think the people who travel with arcade fairgrounds dont pay for the machine license but they pay a seperate license that justs regards fairground arcades.

also you do not need a license for up to 10p £8.00 jackpot machines.

Is that you dont need a licence to use one, or is that you dont need a licence to sell one or rent one to a chip shop for example?

Didnt realise it was up to 8 quid though, thought it was just 5p 5 quid.

Would love to rent machines out..

I thought it was £5/10p, simply because theres very few £8JP machines in kebab shops e.t.c. around here. Mind you, thats probably because with the 10p stake limit, £8 JP machines tend to play pretty badly.

It's really not a lot. The average cash box for a pub is around £250 to £300 per week. Of course there's VAT to pay on that but it more than covers the rent and licence fees. The purchase price of a new machine is around £1,300 to a major operator minus the discount they'll get for selling back an old unit to the manufacturer for recycling. Even at £75 per week that's 4 months the machine has to be on site before it even turns a profit for the owner. This partially explains why Leisure Link and Gamestec are so laden with debt!

sarky not being funny were you getting machine at £1300 the company i work we pay upto £2400 for new machine and thats buying them in bulk off at least 10+ one machine we spend ruff guest near on £59k a month on new machines last week we got a new install to do off 19 units bought off barcrest with a discount off greening machine/recycling still pay near on £1700 to £2100

with fair ground machine if my memory is right they still have 2 pay a permit for each machine

any machine awp upto £8 a permit is need only long as stake is a max of 10p

videos games a permit is needed max play of 20P over 20P per play a licence+permit is needed

Club machines £75/5P no licence but permit is needed
Club machines over this like £100/10P licence is need
Club machine £100/5P i dont think that a licence is needed aswell only permit
Club machines in turbo play £250/5P still need a licence

yeah if your getting brand new machines for 1300 then some shady dealing must be going on.
the only way we can get a machine for 1500 is if we are trading 2 half decent machines against it.

refering to kensplace post...

you dont need a license to have a machine in your premises ie kebab shop or cafe but you still need a permit if the max jackpot is 8 quid and no more that 10p a game.

and your other question is you have to be a lisenced company to actually rent out machines no matter what the stake or prize is.

Sorry, by major operator I really just meant Leisure Link and Gamestec, who are likely to buy by the hundreds.

Surely the worthwhileness of having a fruitie is dependant on the pub its in. Does say a wetherspoon pay the same fee as a local old mans pub??

As far as I know, they pay the same license fee.

I agree about the 'worthwhileness' bit - a local pub had a £25 AWP, Red Gaming somethingorother. Anyway, it was emptied at the end of the month, and the £25 float [the landlord/landlady didn't have a bloody clue]... had become the only £25 in the hopper at the end of the month. About £15 of shrapnel in the cashbox, but thats it.

£15 'profit' from the machine, before you deduct the £50 a week they were paying [thats £35 machine, £15 license through the supplier].

They basically had the machine in the pub, and had managed to lose £185 in that month.

I stuck in Each Way Nudge, £5 JP / 10p play, and after one month it had taken £370 [approx, can't remember the exact figure], on 72% payout.

It isn't normally a case of the machine can't handle a machine, it is a case of working out what the clientelle want from a machine. Each Way Nudge did well because the pub clientelle was averaging about 55 years old, plenty of OAPs, and they liked the 'basic' gameplay, and the fact that with change from a fiver they were entertained for a couple of minutes :)
