Hi

I have been reading some posts about the source code of FME. It all seems to be leaked and not available anymore.

Is there one version that is open source includes a licence (eg GPL)  that allows adjustments and can be shared?

Yes and no

MFME was built using parts from MAME but the source was never released in accordance with the rules, However Wizard did eventually release the code to MFME 2.1 (lacks the support for Scorpion 4/MPU5), this code was hosted on El Condor/James Wallaces site over at http://agemame.mameworld.info but the side link redirects to a 404. Someone may have that stored elsewhere, Maybe Guitar or Geddy.

Additionally there was a leak of some code labeled MFME 9.6 (Which is actually an early build of the 9.4 build thats in the public i believe) but like 2.1 i believe this is built with Borland C5 & the 9.6 soruce is missing a lot of libraries & is poorly optimized when compiled.

Hope this helps. If anyone would care to correct me in any place i'm wrong then please do, my memories not the best & i'm trying to recollect what i can.

As an FYI MAME does have the ability to run a good chunk of machines, however unlike MFME they're poor representations & lack a good rendering engine, something that Haze (David Haywood) & possible El Condor was working on, i believe the plan was to use Guitars Project Amber as a front end for this to design layouts to then run inside MAME.

This video shows how MAME deals with the rendering, not exactly an eye pleaser & the sound is running a few thousand khz too slow -

Speaking of Project Amber i believe Guitar has said that it will be mostly open source except for a few cores, this has been a while mind & thing's may have changed.

The plan is to use Amber as a front end. El Condor was helping ou a bit, but at present my attention is getting Amber going with the C++ cores.

Its a huge undertaking to get everything sorted again and time is at a minimum at present. I wish I had the time to spend on Amber but I don't right now. Hopefully this will change soon.

Thanks for the information. Hope to see the link working again. I just filled in a contact form to notify the webmaster.

Apologies for the site being down, I don't admin the server, and didn't realise that the new setup basically killed my CMS. Everything is back up now.
