Are the doors all closed? Does machine know the doors are shut? i.e does it let you play for free or say doors open when it boots? If machine thinks one of the doors is open it will play in demo mode and not accept coins.

All doors are closed and everything works as normal in test mode . Free play etc. got me puzzled. All I can think of is the coin mechanism is not working properly but don't want to buy another in case it's not that that's the problem

Just to clarify, So the machine happily switches between free play and real play by opening and closing one of the doors? Have you done the obvious and checked the connectors going to the mech are seated correctly and firmly? Some mechs have a green light on them, if so is it lit??

Just be very careful with all the wiring connectors, but perhaps try to clean the inside of the mech of any dust etc, that may be the problem, actually you should not have to remove all the wiring connections, just pull the flap back (COIN FLAP LOL) and you should see a clear laser type thing, just try to clean behind the flap (COIN FLAP) as best as you can. If still no joy make sure all wiring connectors are connected, got to look very carefully as just one connector may not be connected, obviously check everything is connected to the MPU aswell. If still no joy ring the buggers up who you bought the machine from!

Tried cleaning still no joy
only paid £30 for the machine so doesn't stand me at much so might just source a mech to try

Sr5 mechs I have found seem to be very poor on accepting in general, they can be directly replaced with C435 mech which do seem to be better but still never seem to be as good as the old mars mechs!

I found the best way is WD40 on a cloth and clean the inside via pressing the eject and opening the door fully.
