Hi all , hope you are all good ... got a big problem here that is really doing my tits in ... Windows update is not finding any updates to install , basically its stuck in an infinite loop of searching..

Ive searched the internet for hours read every " solution " going , installed KB301158 , KB7132592 , every fkin KB known to man , stop update services restarted , ran the standalone installer ..

Ran in safe mode , re-registered dll files , ran sfc utility , repaired windows install , repaired registry , installed the latest version of the Windows update agent, every solution ive tried has failed basically...

This is after 4 formats and 3 different versions of Windows...the one im running is " legit " well as legit as can be ,,, untouched Windows 7 home premium x64 iso , with my genuine Windows key on the side of my PC tower as when i bought this PC it had Windows preinstalled , same version ...

I thought i knew a bit about PC's and i do to a certain extent , but this one has fked me over big time...has this happened to anyone else .. what was your solution to fix it .., ??

Any help , solutions would be greatly appreciated , thanks :)

( This is the screen its stuck on ... i can leave this for the next 5 hours and it wont change )

Have you connected to Internet via ethernet cable rather than Wi-Fi. That's what fixed it for me. I understand there are multiple causes unfortunately.

basic answer is you can't get updates for windows7 now

and the windows 10 update which was free wasn,t a "full" version

Hi there Todd,

Looking at the picture you are running Windows 7, I have reformatted a machine for someone recently and it took almost 24 hours to finally get the option to install the updates, over 250 of them.

That was with a new SSD so it may take longer. Also, try changing one of your DNS's to 8.8.8.8. I have found that to help.

You mean XP surely ? Windows 7 support wont end until 2020 .. updates are readily avalible for it till then.

Hi Todd,

We've had this issue on a number of machines that came in to our office in recent weeks, generally those that have not had updates for a while or new builds.

Try this:

1) Disable Automatic Updates

2) Reboot

3) Download update KB3102810

4) Check your process list. If you have a svchost process running high RAM 1GB or more (if you do, kill it as it's the normal Windows Update which should no longer be running). CTRL+SHIFT+ESC starts task manager and then click to see the processes and order by RAM used.

5) Install the KB - It should run quite quickly. If it stops on checking for updates then repeat step 4 and try it again.

6) Reboot

7) Try Windows Update again (and re-enable the automatic updates)

This fixed the issue on the PCs which we had. Prior to this the checking for updates process used all the RAM and around half the CPU but then even leaving for 2-3 days didn't make a difference.

No, don't do that, you'd put me out of work (well until they bork one of their updates :)).

Glad it sorted things for you Todd, sadly I'm already taken :)

or download "wsusoffline" from microsoft website and then download all the updates for win7 and install at ur leisure. this is useful if you have to do multiple installs and dont want to redownload all updates everytime ;)

I'll assume this is for windows 7....... the issue, is being caused by part of .net suffering a bad memory leak, which got made even worse by the patches for this fault.

However, the July 2016 rollup update has finally sorted this issue, so what I suggest, is visiting the following link, and get the rollup update for your version, install it, reboot, and trying again.....

Check part two on this link, on how to correctly sort this.

Thanks Stan , but i got it sorted with Magz's solution above , stopping Windows update service and installing the KB file , which i now have a copy of for future reference...

Always seems a good idea to do a clean install of Windows , clear out all the crap from your system if its becoming sluggish and unresponsive ... nothings ever simple with me though..

NP.

Just remember for future reference....... after the first boot on a new install of win7, that July update MUST be installed to stop this .net / windows update issue.

Took me forever to get a solution for this (As in 9 months), and even with the older two KB file trick, it never worked 100% till that July update landed.
