Today just like No1Stoney and Uptown47, I start my journey for the MFME cabinet.

This is really considered day 0 as I start my journey tomorrow.   I am going to post the same article at DIF so posts from at least myself will mirror both sites.

My woodwork skills are not the beast so for myself, I have been looking at a cabinet to but specifically for this.

This is what I am collecting tomorrow.

Although a little battered, this is actually a JPM based cabinet so it will be an ideal framework for everything else that is going to happen.

Currently I am torn between having a touch 30" full screen or a 27" touchscreen in the cabinet.

Pros:

- Touch-screen reduces the need for some buttons.

Cons:

- Not able to put glass on the screen and then slight dirt and markings.

Either way - nothing is set in stone until the cabinet arrives.  I am also wondering about Future Pinball tables here with the vertical screen, if the tilt can be set to a good enough depth - this might be able to double up - but that is a generic thought and not a rock solid plan.

I've looked into a touchscreen cab, the main concern is the ergonomics of the buttons, without a bottom touchscreen at at angle you don't have anything to rest your hands like a normal machine, so it would become uncomfortable long term.   I thought about getting a bespoke second screen that fitted into the button area, but not found anywhere that do this type of thing.  I've looked in at the bookies and they have a bottom screen for the touch buttons, though on there units they are not multi touch.

Good luck with your build whatever you choose ;)

J

Thank you.  That metal panel needs to come off and be replaced - it' s really the shell I was after. :)

Sure - so however this pans out, there is a hand rest panel here that can be used.  If it was full touch, then the metal would need to be replace - but you could rest your hands - otherwise 50% then the buttons will be on the metal bar.

This is ball-dropping stuff.

Very interesting.

I think I'm doing well rotating my monitor so that it's the right perspective!

Can you get the roms dumped from that Skill Shuffle machine, mate?  Don't have them currently.  Would be interesting to see if they would work on MFME.  Is it an Impact based tech?

I believe it is impact.

Re the roms, yes of course - I can actually do that myself ! :)  ( http://www.desertisl...ps-rom-dumping/ )

I also plan on scanning that glass as well.

Would you like me to pass it all over to you ?

Good luck with it Reg, having a Cab as a base should diminish the need to be an expert cabinet maker! Looking forward to seeing how it goes!

So I have been thinking about layouts.

This is in my opinion a slight irony, that layouts made in the past ( at least DX ones ) are more suited for cabinets.

Historically we had a lot of flat screen DX's such as this, this will be perfect...

Attached File  Flatscreen.jpg   625.47KB   0 downloads

...no work needed here.

As we evolved we wanted to get more realistic so we ended up with this...

Attached File  Original.jpg   635.99KB   0 downloads

...that looks lovely, but the cabinet within a cabinet ?

Moving forward, I think the solution is a delicate use of a template to modify the original background to make it look more digitial and when you have a black screen you're looking at this might just work a little easier.  The proof will be in the pudding so time will tell...

I noticed this will my little project, I was using two touchscreens and having the artwork flat without any forced perspective was the best way, I had my bottom glass and buttons on the lower screen at a slight angle like a real machine.

I'm not currently 'Active', layout-wise, mate, so you can upload the resources to the download section on the Mecca.  I don't know if fruit-emu has a similar section for uploading glass scans, and roms, so the Mecca would be the best place. :)

Why don't you take it on yourself?  It's you that's getting the machine after all.  I was just curious to see if it would actually work properly on the emulator.  How would the flipper/ball thing work?  I'm guessing you would need to use the mouse-wheel.

Ok sure NP.

The flipper ball I think will work like the trackball does on Pook's Crystal Maze and my Mating Game, so fingers crossed on that.

I may take it on - but - time is precious and I'll have a hobby of this cabinet.  As you expressed an interest in the game I was more then happy to pass directly - but yeah, I'll share for others. :)

it wasnt a ball that i remember  it was some sort of button you push down the harder you push down the higher it went etc

You had to guess the strength you needed to press down to light the fruits to win the prizes, gotta be near to 30 years since i played it.

I've seen pictures of Skill Shuffle with both.  One with the flipper, and one with a ball.  It's touch-sensitive, so I don't know how MFME will be able to emulate it properly.

Today I collected the machine that is to become the MFME cabinet.

Attached File  Skill Shuffle.JPG   283.17KB   0 downloads

For £29.99, I got the cabinet as above.

Inside I have an ME126 in place ( will need to update later for new £1 ) with all the routing for the hopper and cash-boxes etc.

Attached File  ME126 in place plus routing.JPG   186.96KB   0 downloads

There is a great frame in place that will hold the bezel for the monitor and additional buttons.  Size is 26' x 23'.

Attached File  Frame.JPG   108.6KB   0 downloads

Finally, a generic view of the inside of the cabinet.

Attached File  Inside.JPG   176.7KB   0 downloads

The more eagle eyed of you will spot this is not the right tech for this type of cabinet housing.

It's a standard trackball as far as I can tell in this one.

This all looks superb Reg. Really looking forward to how this pans out. Absolutely brilliant.

On the subject of Future Pinball, I have that on a MAME cabinet I did. The screen in that is only on a slight angle and it's still great to play (I hold the high score on Jaws in our family much to the annoyance of my 11 yr old lad who beats me at everything else).

Looking forward to seeing this develop :)

As this is the same cabinet as mine a 27inch monitor is pretty much your limit. Any more and you have hardly anything above or below the monitor frame. Also if you can get a button layout like casino crazy or club pot black or whatever the jpm snooker clubber is that should do you for an idea of bottom buttons.

Also My buttons on the side are coloured now so they associate with different things. Looks good for jewel in the crown. Etc

Where did you get the perspex sheet from ?

Warning: This post is mostly my own opinions and may contain irony, if you are obsessed with PAST history you may want to ignore it.
