Hi all,

Have been away from the scene for quite some time, and come back to find a lot has changed, and I mean A LOT!  Well done everyone on keeping this vibrant scene going, it appears to be iun rude health!  I’m not an active part of it to my shame, but do pop back every other year or so to see what’s changed, hence the many questions below.  Sorry there are so many, I absolutely promise you I checked all the knowledge base, FAQs, emulator notes, but can find nothing that helps me with the below.  Thanks in advance for any and all help, the 5 minutes it will take some kind soul to answer the obvious for me, could well save me hours of pain or frustration if I c*ck something up.

1                     What’s the difference between MFME5.1 and MFME6?

2                     MFME6 does not seem to support the dat format any more, ie requires specific new layouts, but is 5.1 backward compatible with anything?

3                     (linked to 2) Does MFME5.1 supersede any of the older MFMEs, ie MFME1/2/3/9/10?

4                     Essentially I have a spreadsheet listing around 1,200 machines with a field telling me which MFME to use for particular machines, I just want to know if this can be updated if either of the new emus have made any of the older versions redundant.

5                     Do either of the new emus support Club Pick of the Pack?  If so, will someone please hurry up and do it!  Pook had a WIP on his site for a while until he realised it was a non-runner.

6                     I keep all my layouts in the same folder, ie not in their own specific folders (I’m sure a few OCD’ers just passed out), but am already noticing that some of the video layouts in particular have conflicting filenames.  I used to rename things like Roms in the .gam files in older versions of MFME to avoid file contention, can I still do this with the video layouts?

7                     I never found the time to work out how to use project amber, is this still relevant or has it been superseded?

Hey welcome back

1/ Get both, you'll need to load older .dat file layouts (basically anything released before October 2016) into v5.1, which when saved as .gam files, will work in v6. Everything released since v5.0 was released, will work in v6, which uses .gam files.

2/ See 1

3/ Yes, after the unofficial 9.4 and 10.1, v5.0, then v5.1 and now v6.0

4/ Just follow advice in 1. Also there is a layout fixes thread stickied in the general fme section, with lots of info on getting machines running (don't worry, over 90% of releases will run without fixes).

5/ Probably.

6/ You can still keep things in one folder if you want.

7/ Yes Project Amber worked for a few, but everything and more Amber can do, MFME can do.

Obviously you meant .fml files rather than .gam files.

Basically the idea is to convert all old layouts to .fml format using v5.1, then use v6 to run everything thereafter, there is hopefully nothing that needs any version below v5 now.

Oh my, have I understood that correctly, v5.1 is simply a converter to make everything (not already v6 compatible) v6 compatible, at which point, that is the only version of MFME anyone will ever need?  That would simplify a LOT, and take me days to sort out, though worse problems to have :-)

Thanks for the welcome back and speedy info Wearecity, very much appreciated.  And Wizard, where do I start?  If I could pay you a penny for every minute I've enjoyed playing fruities from my past you would be a very rich man - thank-you for your (continued) excellent work.

Yes Wizard correct I meant .fml file instead of .dat files are used from v6 onwards.

And yes eyleyro. Basically now everything works in v6, from the earliest machines of the 70's to the latest machine around 2013. No longer a need for v3.2 + v9.4 and v10.1 to be used.

At the moment you should have v5.1 just to open then save the older pre v5.0 released layouts, v5.0 came out Halloween 2016, so anything before that will need converting. Once you've done converting them all, then you just need v6.

Hey eyleyro, long time good to see see you back :)

I'd forgotten all about Pick of the Pack, just fished out the old artwork, assume it runs ok now which means Double Dealer might too which I also have art for.
