If it was bought from say a large business that has loads of laptops, it is more than feasible that they left a logger on it for tracking employees usage of work stationery... and forgot to remove it when sold.

If he bought it new from Dell, then I think it is fake. The soldering and stuff makes me think it is homemade, probably an ex Dell disgruntled employee, or disatissfied customer.

Maybe they do come with a Keylogger, and by the sound of it, some other brands may aswell :S

i spotted the lol/lol.html almost instantly

BUT, in the subject of DELL, i recently has a Dell server, and can honestly say it was one of the best built PC`s i have ever come across.

unfortunatly, Dell disables the use of the pci-e gfx port, to `aid system stability` which is why i sent it bad (sadly) i managed to get a deal for the dual 3.0 xeon system with a 36gig SCSI drive (i clocked it at 215mb per sec) and 512k ddr2 memory, all for 399+vat.

the idea was to have this system to do my video editing with the power of the Xeon`s, yet have the pci-e graphics to play mfme and halflife2 in the mean time.

oh well, its a pitty they dont actually tell you these things before you buy...

lol does give a probably clue.. As ben mentioned also, the soldering is a giveaway, its really bad quality, and not something that a large firm would release.

But on the other hand, as the other link mentioned previously shows, these do exist, and they are not exactly difficult to design or make, its very possible that you may have one in your work pc, if your boss is a tw*t.
