you have to look at it objectively. Where will the government get its cut of 6.5 billion per year?
Whilst of course you cant compare this to the recent upskirt bill that was blocked, it id however a classic example of blocking a bill specifically so that parliament get the last word, and that it doesn't impact everything else.
I'm one of the very few here that didn't agree with the £2 stake, as it will drive users off-shore.
I'd have stuck with £20-£30

Just started to read the article...
"Labour has accused the government of being “fundamentally weak” after ministers bowed to pressure from bookmakers and agreed to a two-year delay before slashing the maximum stake on controversial FOBT's"
It was a Labour policy that bought them in the first place but the Guardian seem to have forgotten about that. I agree with nails in that it will drive people elsewhere to gamble so we get even less tax revenues than we would have. I feel that we are cow-towing to whoever can shout the loudest. I know the dangers of gambling and how addictive it can be but what about the free will of people to make their own minds?
I, as many on here love to have a flutter, I don't want to be told how to gamble, how much to spend etc...so why should everyone else suffer? I know of the dangers, believe me, I know of people who have lost six figures.
Remember that the people in charge have to try and keep everyone happy which is not possible so that is why they only tend to look after the hand that feeds them, i.e. big businesses.
Rant over (for now)

I remember seeing a machine in my local bookies with £50 spin option, think it was a game called 'Worms'. That is crazy stake for a game that is capped at £500 jackpot. I'd class £50 a spin as 'hi-roller' gambling which really should only be available in a casino, should never have been allowed in a bookies.

I have to agree with you Vecs, if I stake n, I should win n x 1000, if that is what the Jackpot is, there really is no benefit in gambling £200 a spin to win a top prize of £500.
I do remember reading about Club machines that increase the payout percentage by quite a margin if you play on a £2 for example but otherwise what is the point?

There was a £100 a spin fruity a few years back...
the whole point of these £20-£30-£50 spins is to speed up the process of winning the jackpot.

My CMS would go to £250 spins! £500 jackpot machine.

Just 2 stories where online is just as bad as FOBTs

When the £2 stakes eventually do come in, the games designers will have (if not already) come up with something to bypass the law somehow, a pre 50-1 £2 gamble to get £100 for the roulette wheel for example, the GC need to be careful of the standards they set, the designers are usually 5 steps ahead of them anyway

reading through some forums it appears that everybody thinks that the reason the stakes are proposed to be £2 - is to protect the vulnerable from pishing their income support straight into a machine.
WRONG
BACTA have been lobbying for years to get a level playing field. Agreed it was a kick in the teeth that sec16 was removed and the new b3 category was introduced; couple this with a smoking ban and a few recessions, it became somewhat dire.
but back to the main point here, BACTA had rather craftily appointed a member of their committee thats also a memeber of parliment. They have blatantly used bad press to their gain, it was never about protecting people, it was about protecting their members arcades.
What if arcades got £20-£30 mega spins under the newly proposed cat b5 machine. do you think they would have kicked up a fuss then? absolutely not!!! the FOBT/cat b2 debait would simply go on a back burner.
According to their we site - " Bacta is the trade body which represents the interests of Britain’s amusements and high street gaming manufacturers and operators." i've got no doubt that the organization its professionally run, in fact ive rubbed shoulder with 90% of them. But their is a great amount of showmen still on the board (see the end for a explanation of who the showmen are). They love to F*ck everybody over, drive around in their top of the range car, order 5 of the latest machines in front of everybody at the show, then cancel them behind closed door!
He's the kind of guy who was quite happy to have his machines on 72% and when your bank got blanked via a crash would laugh and say malfunction voids pay!. imagine their faced when novomatic introduced the gaminator at 92% payout
Section 16 made a lot of money in a short space of time. linked rainbow riches and cashino etc. would see somebody win £500 and then carry on for the gold pot. A good friend of mine took £30,000 out of 5 linked machines in one week. Then big brother gaming commission stepped in, and the showmans dreams were over. then the FOBT fight began.
I mention all this because i want you to get an idea of how and why the FOBT fight came around, and who initiated it. Where was protection of the vulnerable when the £30k was taken ? Like i said earlier, this has absolutely nothing to do with saving the likes of me and you, its to do with lining the showmens pockets. that said, this could have repercussions from all angles here, increased tax from 20%, potential lowering of their £2 stake, technical standards to increased spin time. etc. etc.
The fight is not over yet, bookies of course will fight the decision and im still of the opinion that a £20-£30 in reasonable. After all, how can you win £500 at £2 on a 35/1 shot ? Pre-gamble maybe, but certainly gambling your winnings would be odd's on in that eventuality.
as for the showmen of this world, they were travelling family's that stopped their fairgrounds and went to different parts of the coast and set up camp. Most are either dead now or in their 80's, the likes of Harry Symonds in Hastings, Billy Edwards in Portsmouth, Billy peak in (clacton on sea ??) then you have North wales, Felixtow, the list goes on. Don't get me wrong, their are some fantastic owners out their that will bent over backwards for a customer.
i`ll continue my rant later..

This all sounds too complicated. Let's just set it down to £10 jackpot and 20p per spin - back to the fun times

Makes more sense to me than 50p / £1 / £10 / £200 a spin. Like you say bring the fun back.
Sooner they see sense the better. Boo hoo if a few more bookies close down, every dog has it's day and their day is drawing to an end ..
