IN some ways it's a good way to finish. If either presenter had just quit then it would have left things rather open ended. AT least now 1982 (?) -2005/Countdown/Whiteley+Vorderman will have been immortalised in TV history. It was a laid back kind of show enjoyed by many elder members of my family. After a day on the machines a spot of Countdown at 4p.m was a nice way to unwind for me as well. You could get into quite a routine, aiming to be back for 4pm at the latest. Now I have a full time job I haven't seen the programme in ages, but it is quite unique in several respects.
Talk was that Esther Rantzen would replace Whiteley. Hmmm. Not sure.
Who else has that bumbling, non threatening, feigned incompetence aura of Whiteley? Quite unique in my opinion and irreplacable. I'm just thinking now if I were the producer who I'd get in to cover. I really don't know.
Oh I know, let's get whatsisface off Catchphrase...Roy walker. Yes he'd be good. It's never going to be the same, but like I say it was a decent innings and there was never any petering out, just <> and there you have it. Decision made. That 15-1 ain't a patch on Countdown is it? All those blimin' shitty questions and the like.

Well RIP, it's a pity more people aren't as unassuming in nature as Richard Whiteley.

Let's do a conundrum, a crucial conundrum

MUTEUFIR

Ok it's not 9 letters, but I was never any good at the conundrums anyway.

Your time starts......now......

I think he means that was probably taken from a photoshopped 9 letter thing - I have one saying $&%#MEOFF with a very happy looking Carol :)

I'm hoping that it was simply a harmless version of that but not said in the best way, I'm sure KK will let us know :)

What KK is referring to above is a famous Countdown clip, I guess it is an edited one, but you can make your own minds up on it :)

You can access the famous clip from this page :

My understanding is that it is faked, but as part of one of those TV Christmas tapes, like that episode of Rainbow. Apparently it's pieced together from some real outtakes, and then fiddled with to make it more continuous.

The W**KMEOFF piccie that sometimes appears on some sites is a total fraud though, as they would have reshot as soon as the first four letters came out, so to speak.

RIP richard, you were a familiar face, and a well liked host of a popular show.

Didnt watch countdown that often (but if it was on, I would watch it, I remember watching the 1st episode, the first thing shown on channel 4 ever...)

To be honest, I thought the show was great, apart from one thing, Richard - he sent me to sleep, or made me cringe at the crap he came out with, but I am sad he has passed away, as he appeared (on screen at least, which is how I perceive him) as a genuine nice guy. No idea what he was like off camera.

I hope they continue the show, it will never be the same without him, it will be different, but there is no harm in that.

as my local itv area is yorkshire, got kind of use to the guy appearing on the local news.(before he jacked it in)

he always came across as a likable type of bloke.one of those types who you didn`t spend that much time thinking about when he was alive, but now he`s gone you can`t but help think how weird it`ll be not seeing him on screen again.

as for countdown,i found it highly annoying.

my reason?

it made me feel thick as i was rubbish at it.

lol.................nice one.................

Weird thread this though isn't it.

A 'poxy-afternoon-C4-quiz' has had so many replies here and on many other forums.....

The BBC News is an eye opener...the amount of messages sent to it, more than I have ever seen for anybody really.

Personally all I ever watch is Sport, bit of Discovery but always the 'poxy' Countdown. Honestly think this is the best thing the French have given us...lol

Lol I know it it was a modified pic [the $&%#MEOFF one], but it was hilarious back in... ummm.. 1998 when I was 12 [is that really 7 years ago?!!!].

I know this is controversial, but this is my case in point :

Diana dies, you know how much news coverage that got.
Mother Theresa died... got about 1 minute on the news.

I mean, that was Mother Theresa for f**ks sakes, but no, I mentioned that to about 10 people in the pub and 9/10 said 'she isn't really dead though, is she? I mean, you are joking?'.

Sums it up really. Nice to see that a genuinely nice bloke gets such excellent replies though sent in to places aruond the world, and even on here [bar one or two posts].

Thanks for keeping this thread as I had intended it to be, a fairly light hearted but entirely respectable place to remenisce and pay respects :)

Mother Teresa used what little money she had, and her time, to help the poor.

Diana on the other hand, used her time and money on marketing to promote herself and her family.

Guess which one got the most publicity, the most sad twats grieving after her.....

Money talks... Sadly.
