Keep an eye on ebay.co.uk for note acceptor parts, they turn up from time to time, you should be able to get a bezel and maybe a lead from ebay if you keep looking long enough.
Failing that, you may need to buy a new lead, or make one up.
The blanking plate on the front of the machine is easy to remove, you first need to remove the whole payout tray, just open the machine's top door, and you will see three wingnuts near the reels. Undo those, and the payout tray will come off (be careful it does not drop of!). Put the tray to one side, then you should be able to finish removing the note acceptor blanking plate (there should also be a metal plate behind the plastic one, that needs removing also, unbolt if required, open lower door for access if needed)
Not sure about nv8 compatibility, got a JCM in my machine, so not looked into the smiley ones much, but you will need to make sure its the right interface, some acceptors are switchable between serial and parallel.
