martians point about second hand smoking killing is valid though, points have been made within this thread, with links and clinical evidence showing that there is no conclusive proof that 2nd hand smoke is harmful.

Still stinks up your clothes, gets in your eyes, makes your throat dry and is generally unpleasant though...

ive been a social smoker for 10 years. This is my regime.

Gym three nights a week. 2 hour session.
Absolutely love a smoke when i am up the pub with my mates. Probably 5 a night.

When i am out of the pub I do not think about a smoke. I no we cant all do this but thats the way ive always been with smoking. I play footie every Sunday and love it to bits.

I quite frankly coudnt care less about the ban. It will not work anyway... There is no way in the world all places will ban. How can you aprehend a landlord for something he can not control. as for the smokers, I could just see all the cells full every saturday night dealing with smokers lighting up in wrong places.

This c***ry is totally F*cked up, stop spending our money debating about petty things like this. Get the so called c***ry sorted first... NHS,Police,Schools,Tax etc.....

right im off to live in Dubai. Chow Peeps....

Actually, the landlord is 100% accountable for smokers, and both the landlord and the smoker get a pretty hefty fine. For the landlord, there is the bonus of a lost license for persistent infringements too.

Sorry, but if I run a crowded pub and someone starts smoking in a secluded area or bog. Then I get my licence taken away.

Fair enough, wont be buying a pub then. Poor sods.

Yep, that could happen. Simple smoke alarm should remedy that - works on planes. Plus the stench of the smoke would soon become obvious to staff who could then eject you from the premises.

Spot on mate, doesn't make any sense, sorry Magz. Can you imagine someone having a sly smoke in the toilets and then someone from the anti-smoking brigade grasses to the landlord that someone has been smoking in the toilet. What he's going to do? Stand up on the bar and shout "Right, you lot, who's been smoking in my toilet then!!!!". Get a grip Magz.

If someone is caught then fair enough the pub has to evict them. If it doesn't THEN it's liable.

I don't think smoke alarms in toilets will work. They aren't that sensitive. For the ones in my house to go off I need to stand directly below it and blow smoke at it or hold my cigarette underneath it. Smokers will use toilets for a quick puff the same way that people use them for a quick puff on a joint.

That's very nice, but it's not what the law has in mind. Mostly, of course, this ban will be self policing. It is quite clear however, that both the landlord as well as the offender are liable for fines should they not take appropriate steps to prevent smokers from smoking within their premesis. As I said before, this is likely just the first step towards having a total ban on smoking anywhere in public places enclosed or otherwise, and as it generates revenue, I would be surprised if it is not rigorously enforced.

Do you mean enforced as in the same way that the law against letting under 18's into pubs or nightclubs is enforced?

The same way that drugs (which are illegal whilst smoking isn't) are sold in pubs, nightclubs, the smell of hash around everywhere whilst the staff get on with their jobs?

Good!!!! :)

Anyway, me and my smoking chums are planning a night in. It'll be interesting to see how busy the town gets tonight. I'll keep you posted.

Here's the report from my town that I promised. It's just after 2am and the nightclub just across the road from me has just emptied...or should I say has just had a few people come out and headed for the hoard of waiting taxes stretching right up the town centre. It's dead!! When the pubs closed earlier I looked out and a handful of people were walking up the main street. Taxis are piled upon high ( no sympathy for them) but I have got sympathy for all the pubs which will be forced out of business with this ludicrous ban.

I went out for a chinese earlier and explained to the bouncers at the nightclub that myself and a few other mates wouldn't be in because of the smoking ban. He explained that while it was being vigorously watched right now...in a few weeks it would be old news...and they wouldn't care less if smoking went in inside. I told him I would be back then if it was still open and doesn't go bust.

In the meantime the town is dead...Smokers are at home. A few neds are walking the streets causing trouble as is the norm. The majority of them are at home. Hope you enjoyed your smoke free night in an empty pub...lol

If smokers can't go out for a few hours without lighting up a cigarette it shows just how addicted they are. I don't see the problem, who stays in the same pub all night? just have your cigarette between pubs if you can't live without one

Private health insurance is a lot cheaper than the price a heavily addicted person pays weekly to smoke.
If a private firm can afford treatment for less than a smoker wastes a week, then so can the NHS (well it could if it got rid of corruption, and overpaid idiotic consultants)

Fair one about overpaid idiotic consultants, and corruption... if this were true. I'm a hospital doctor, and I can tell you I've never seen these things happen. What sort of corruption are you talking about? Also, these "idiotic" consultants have dedicated years and years of their life to learning, so that they can try to fix you when something, smoking or non-smoking related, goes wrong. Why are they "idiotic"? Just because they earn a high(ish) wage? Don't they deserve a decent living? Most have 10's of years experience, and genuinely just want to make you healthy. Most premier division footballers get more in a week than consultants get in a year, and for what? Kicking a football around? Now THATS idiotic!

have to agree with sharpy there, as a medical rep i work in the hospitals and tend to cover a variety of different departments, it means i get to see a large proportion of people from various departments. Ok so i've met some arrogant buggers in the hospitals but i dont begrudge one of them their pay packet, they work damn hard to get where they are and deserve what they get if you ask me

yeah i smoke 40 a day now instead of 20 :D

just messing, to be fair i am coming round to the idea of quitting smoking now, my views on the whole subject havent changed but the missus has now stopped due to health reasons and will most likely be moving in with me within a year, bit unfair for me to be off like a chimney like that so may have to get the old patches out

I did try and stop and lasted 3 days until my unthoughtful work decided to pay off a quarter of the staff thereby creating tension and forcing me back on the ciggies. :)

Seriously, shouldn't have started again but my veins are popping at present.

My thoughts on the subject haven't and won't change whether I do manage to quit or not.
