a torrent is a link to obtain a file over a network, typically for one computer directly to another.
if you were, for example, downloading the latest pirate music, or mpu5 (wish) then you could be here -http://thepiratebay.org/legal.php which is the biggest pirate site on this planet, you click on a torrent, and it will download the latest pirate software to your computer, via someone elses computer.
upon clicking the torrent, it would typically run you installed program that handles bit torrents (shareaza for example) and handle the download in the background.
ok?

a torrent is a file that you download to use with file sharing programs like Bitornado, bitcomet( the client program). You need to run the client software then open the torrent which contains file imformation, tracker urls.
You are sharing this "torrent" with possibly 1 to 100 seeders (people with the completed files) and 1-1000 leechers (people with incomplete files) you then become a leecher and upload sharing your internet bandwidth distrubiting the files that you have downloaded...
A more indepth guide here :- Here

Okay so the software you download is like a client that sits in the background, when you click on a torrent, I notice it downloads it as a Torrent Document, Is this then handled by the client and converted to say a MP3?

Obviously this is highly illegal, and would not dream of doing it...., How come that site nails suggested has not been shut down, looks a hefty load of legal notices served on them.

Sites come and go...really depends on the country where the servers are hosted and applicable laws with regard to copyright. A whole slew of servers got shutdown in Holland before last xmas but reopened on belgium servers this summer...

Hi
Put simply bit torrent is a peer 2 peer file shareing system, once you have found your torrent site, you click on the file and you will download this into your torrent progam, I use azurus but there are others, this file you have downloaded then creates the folder/file in your choosen folder and starts downloading it, however you are downloading your file from many peers, so your download speed will be fast as the bandwidth is shared over many users, the torrent program handles the download and shareing in the background. when you file is fully downloaded its the complete file be it zip,mp3 ect. Its normaly expected that once you have got the file you keep it open for other users to grab. Obviously all of this is illiegal and i don't download any files in this manor.

There are loads of torrent sites and client programs available just google for results.
Emule,Bittorrent, kazaa, limewire are a few of the p2p clients available for sharing files of anysort not just pirated wares...although pirated wares do seem to be popular.
Filesharing will be around for a while much like the adult orientated sites the internet became famous for.. just make sure if p2p does interest you that you keep things sensible and safe..and dont forget to virus scan anything shared...

Torrents are OK for a quick fix if you need something popular and urgent. I use MIRC for my sharing although rooms are specific in what they are sharing. Dedicated rooms for like MP3's, Karaoke songs, Soundtracks, programs, utilities ect... If theres enough members in the room you're in and you get voiced, you can grab just about anything.

the reason pirate bay didnt get shut down like the rest of the good sites (suprnova, pheonix torrents etc) is coz they are in sweden (or switzerland i get the 2 mixed up lol) and their laws differ from most and it means they cant be touched
I agree Azureus is the best bittorrent client i have downloaded 260GB in the last 2 or 3 years with it and uploaded 330GB (see im not just a leecher) and the best sites at the mo have to be mininova.org and torrentspy.com
Also it is very rare that a torrent file isnt what it says it is which is the bane of all the p2p programs.
Anything else?

...America can touch anything, even if it means paying the owner of a torrent site a large sum of money for a list of IP addresses.

Paying for a list of I.P addresses will allow them to send threatening letters to I.S.P's. Then they will forward hte letter to you. Thats all that will happen in 99 percent of cases. Nothing more usually happens, they just try to scare people. They know they have zero proof of anything, so know they can never proceed.
Just been thinking about how the music industry is going after the biggest sharers of music....
Surely they are going after the wrong target..
Cant see it actually being illegal to actually own music, and then install a app, and share the folder.
That in itself, sharing the music folder is not illegal. You are not forcing anyone to come along and download, nor are you actively forcing the file down anyones throats.
Its the same as me putting a pile of sony music cd's in my living room and holding a party in the living room. The music is there, open for anyone to walk away with.... But I am not doing anything wrong.
Even if I had a disc duplication machine in the room, I would be doing nothing wrong.
Its the people who download it that are technically more in the wrong... Not the people who they are going after. That is if the sharers actually own the music - but they never stop to ask questions they sue first......
Then again, even the people who download could be innocent. After all its common knowledge that so many files are misnamed on the p2p networks, that its pot luck what you get..... You have a good chance of watching porn apparently if you search for a modern movie name and download it.
So how can the record industry sue, when its highly possible people are just innocently downloading new titles in the hope its porn or something else? A random suprise in effect.
Or maybe, they own a cd, say a sony one, and they want to download it of the net so they can listen on their pc, without having the crap installed by the original cd from sony......
A lot of the blame for misnamed files lays on the shoulders of the big companies, as they do it on purpose themselves to try to catch people out.
Which makes me wonder, is inciting a crime legal? Didnt think it was. Entrapment and all that......
Also, if they cant stay within the law, why should there customers?
Think I should brush up on virus writing, could get a job with sony lol

the site i believe is in the upper part of russia in an area not claimed by either state, therefore, seemingly has no owner. Since their are no authorities to close the site, he continues to trade.

This is what the pirate bay think of the authorities. It make quite an amusing read really.
