Barcrest.they are absolutely unbeatable. the machines they keep on producing are top notch

For me Barcrest - Some of my all time favourites are Line-Up, Chances Unlimited, Razzle Dazzle and Snappy(Hyper) Viper. The most addictive of them all has to be Line-up as quite often many would have "just one more go" as you may get Feature Hold not to mention that lovely sound of Unlimited Nudges!

It was a very promising tech if I remember correctly. Interactive games played on the LED screen. I sort of remember one where you took a feature, and fired arrows at cash values. Not fantastic today, but back in it's day, a bold and promising step forward in gameplay.

Were all CASTLE games released 10p £4?


I love Sp.Ace. The tech which had it's roots cut from CASTLE. Same dot matrix display and to some extent, some similar games (as in the £1.20 exchange for Nudge Shoot on ACE's Camelot). The first versions of Twilight Zone and Open The Box were fantastic to play. A £50 bank maximum, lots of time on the 'Timed Nudges' exchange and a rather generous streak for a 20p play £4.80 game. Then they were re-chipped to disgraceful pieces of junk full of predictability and annoying game play that compared to their earlier incarnations, cheated the hell out of the player.

In trying to make money for the operator, and to give a set percentage, they chipped at the fun part of the game. It wasn't always about winning on these games. It was about getting jackpot from Timed Nudges, or lining up a row on the Band Aid. I didn't care if my money eventually went. As long as there was fun to be had. Instead of decreasing the frequency of payouts but leaving the gameplay in tact, they adjusted the frequency AND the gameplay so they were no longer fun.

When ACE first launched 'Play it Again', you sometimes had to queue to play on one. It was the same for Play It Again and Twilight Zone. Soon as they messed with the gameplay, these machines vanished as people stayed well away as if they were diseased.

I'm sure ACE's demise wasn't down to bringing out poor machines, but rather them turning great machines into poor ones by re-chipping them.

All the AWPs were based on 10p/£4 token, some were also switchable to £2 cash.

Castle also made a club machine called "Ambassador" which was available in 5p/£60, 10p/£100 and 20p/£150 flavours. I'd love to get one of those...

ACE did make some brilliant games for sp.ACE but I still feel that ACE could have made some much better games with Mach2000 at their disposal.

i voted for maygay, even though the boards inside were rubbish the games were fantastic, donkey kong, fruit explosion, on the buses, monopoly, fight night, coronation street eastenders. the best games with great sounds! as for jpm, they are my least favourite, red alert why would any one like that, so boring! the modern machines i would choose barcrest again for gameplay like donna kebab, king kebab, austin powers, beats jpm by mileeessssss! lol

The MayGAY machines you mention had some fun in them but but often short changed you on top features. There were plenty of clones about. Basically the same machine with a different theme. Much as we see today with the DOND stuff. MayGAY were good for their themes though. Their tie-in's like Donkey Kong, Monopoly, Eastenders ect... Playing games based on real themes with the correct tunes did enhance the playing experience.

I don't mind the JPM's on Impact but have to agree with you about Red Alert. A very harsh machine that caused much frustration. Even on the emulator, I get frustrated with it. It just seems to be a terribly mean machine.

ACE did have a knack to bleed an idea bone dry. Play it Again having Twilight Zone as a clone. Open the Box having Pound for Pound, Grand Prix, Camelot, Hi Flyer, and a couple of others I can't remember at the moment. Thinking about it, this was pretty much all ACE produced for the first few years.

have to say did love the old ACE machines ie play it again / swop shop etc but the best for me would have to be the extreme machines just for the BIG payouts when pushed if you are that type of player, and still highly playable for the average player,cant remember the name of my fav (had cheese in the name ) but the SQUEAK STREAK was something special at times ie regular £100 ++ if you find one push it and be pleasantly surprised !

Difficult decision this.
I have voted for JPM, but Barcerst and Bell came close.

There are not many fun machines to play these days, so I have based my decision on my favourites from a few years ago, when you could play a machine (even a Club m/c) for hours, and not be completely fleeced!

A note on JPM: I noticed several other people have voted for JPM, and have had a look at their website (JPM Group) - it seems they are no longer owned by Sega and are back in private ownership.

For anyone interested, have a look at their products list, most of their new machines seem to be aimed at Spain and Eastern European countries!
