You might be right about Hedgehog being the brand name...Can't quite remember although I definitely remember Tudor Curry flavour and Tudor Chocolate flavour to name but two.

Thanks for the info Ben...So they were taken over during the 5 years I spent down in London.....Sods

personally I don't eat crisps often but when I do my favourite were always "Seabrook Crisps" made in Bradford, the crinkle cut crisps. Original and Canadian Ham were very nice. I was also partial to monster munch though I believe them to be owned by walkers?

Apparently, the main cause for the demise of Golden Wonder was their heavy reliance on "own brand" crisps which they manufactured for the supermarkets. It's the old 'you make our crisps (or pies or sausages or fresh meat) for this price or we'll bugger off elsewhere' mentality of the supermarkets. People like Tesco's and Asda are killing small businesses in this country in their endless chase for mega profits. I suspect Golden Wonder ended up making these own brand crisps at a loss, and then couldn't generate enough sales of their own products (Wheat Crunchies, Nik Naks etc.) to offset the loss. It's a shame, but when you're up against Walkers (with the backing of Pepsico) you have no chance.

I used to work for Bowyers who had a plant in Yorkshire at one time, and we supplied pies to Hillards (before they were swallowed up bt Tesco's) and also pies and sausages to the Co-op. I know these were either low or no profit items, however Bowyers had a big enough base of their own to support these ranges. These type of contracts were usually taken on just to keep volume going through the factory, and prevent job losses in quiet periods.

Seabrooks crisps are great - they do some really odd-ball flavours. My local pub has recently had 'Bacon and Brown Sauce', and we've also had sample bags of 'Garlic' & 'Fish and Chips'. The best flavour at the moment is 'Sea Salt and Black Pepper' which are to die for.
