would you a have a leg to stand on.

simple answer is no because its up to the landlord who he wants in his pub and has the right to switch a machine off if he doesn't want a certain person to play it.

its a bit shitty but really up to his own discretion.

Baz is totally right, I used to have this happen to me all the time, as out in the pubs I used to play in, and it was due to several staff members that were annoyed I was winning 'their' money out of the machine.

Probably a silver bullet :)

There should be a New rule about the switching off as it happens in the bowling alley in New Brighton

Too many kids switching them off then on ... But again nothing happens :(

They switch them off cos they lost all their money

If they are tampering with the machines I'd have them barred, even if their attempts at plugging didn't get them any cash.

This is an obvious attempt at defrauding a machine, so I'd be 100% happy to have them barred. However, saying 'he wins too often' is not IMHO reasonable grounds to suspect fraud, so I find it pretty shocking some landlords have the cheek to turn the machines off.

Still, the landlords that used to turn the machines off when I walked in soon found themselves out of a job. Funny thing 'natural justice'. Making your clientelle feel under suspicion and unwelcome isn't the best way to attract customers - UNLESS you have reasonable grounds to suspect the person is commiting fraud, such as the machine being switched on/off without permission, especially on more than one occasion.

Talking of bowling alleys and switching off machines....

We were in a superbowl one night just before closing, my mate was playing.... Up Up and away (or one of the ones like it)... now hows this for BAD TIMING....

They didn't check if anyone was still in the building (even tho we were regulars and knew all the staff)

My mate got JP... and it when you get it, it says.....

THIS IS THE MOMENT... YOU'VE BEEN WAITING FOR..... (then spins does the JP dance)

however, ours went.... THIS IS THE MOMENT... YOU'VE BEEN WAITING FOR.... then all the machines were switched off!!! lol, they let us play for a further 5 mins and luckily we got £40 out in that time... but what are the chances of timing like that lol

I'm not supporting the landlords here but look at it from their point of view? A stranger comes into their pub and plays the fruit machine. Sure, no grounds to throw a strop and turn the machine off but if you were a regular, he/she would be a little more inclined to leave you to it on the machine.

Moral of the story though is that a landlord will always think your scamming a machine if you are new to the pub and go straight onto the machine. So play safe and use the local where you are known and to some extent, trusted.

This is a stupid point of view. If all landlords behaved like this then the machines would never be turned on, and therefore would never make money. Why not just put a sign up saying "regulars only" and watch the profits disappear? To some extent, the regulars rely on the strangers to fill the machines back up after they've creamed them. A regular will not play his local machine if he nows it's just dropped two or three jackpots.

The problem is that most landlords do not know what to look for when they suspect somebody of defrauding the machines. It is more probable that the landlord is a player and is pissed off because somebody else is winning rather than him.

On a more positive note, I was in Weatherspoons in Skipton the other week. Waiting for my lunch to arrive I put £5 in the bandit - walked away with £54. Staff were more than happy to exchange my nice gold discs for rustly bits of paper - no questions asked.

this was a few years ago now
i was working and took my lunch break and decided to nip to a nearby pub
went into the pub and bought drinks and got change for the machine all ok so far then when i started to win the landlord started to watch very closely and complained about me not buying enough drinks so i humoured him and bought drinks each time asked. a few jps down the line i finished a drink and put my empty glass down and was asked to leave as i was did not have a drink still i came out £84 up so who cares :)

jaccibob

what the landlord said is absolute bullshit.nobody gets a fruit machine for free unless it doesn't make enough money.

thats one of the most stupid things in the history of my engineering life that i have ever heard.

there are 2 options on rental or 50/50 shares.

1st, if its on rental then the landlord pays a fixed rental charge per month or 3 whether it takes money or not.

2nd, 50/50 means half goes to the landlord or whoever and the other half goes to owner of the machine. if its on 50/50 the landlord will not get charged for rental if the machine has no taking's.

its agreed by contract between landlord and machine supplier before hand of the terms and conditions.

all my machines are on 50/50 shares and not on rental. i only operate on shares basis only.

I guess it depends on the pub. My local is somewhat quiet, and only has a £5 jackpot machine, 10p per play. On occaision, it goes for £10-15 (off about 8-10) and he does tick his head around. As most of his customers are munters / over 80 me ands about 3 other people win most of the cash out of the machine but it never gets to the point of accusation.
Frankly, barring someone is obviously fine. If it gets to the point where you are switching the machine on and off as someone comes in and out then frankly I would wonder if being a pub landlord is really a good idea...

Hang on... I thought 50/50 share between operator and supplier was illegal?

I thought it HAD to be rental, or outright purchase?
