your thinking of ESWL (Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy ). In this case they use several thousand 'shocks' of ultrasoung waves to fragment the stone so its easier to pass but its usually only used in stones lodged in the upper ureter or renal stones. Its used for stones that may not pass well naturally.
If the stones are small enough and seen as going to pass naturally then its preferred that no such surgical intervention is used
