I was thinking about that, I know I've missed it, but I don't appear able to modify the poll... and it's not a real curry anyway :) Totally agree with Kingfisher, even if it is brewed in the UK now (AFAIK).

You still live in Peterborough don't you? What do you make of the Bombay Brasserie on the Broadway?

Its okay, the best one i rekon in peterborough is jennas tandori. its behind the chicago rock cafe.. that is a wicked meal mate. going off subject a bit, but if you ever fancy a good chinese try hong kong gardens in whittlesey.

Cheers for the heads up, I'll bear that in mind :)

Been a while since I've been there, but lets see if my geography of Peterborough is OK.

I think I know which one that Jenna Tandoori place is, I used to walk across a grassed area into the city centre, which ran parallel to the Broadway. There was a restaurant at the end of that, which was the same size as say a 2/3 bed detached house. It backed onto the Lakeside Superbowl?

Yeah, talking about spelling my indian do call them Biryani's and not Biriyani's....There's no i. When I asked about this I was assured there was no i in the spelling....I replied with "There's no i in Japs either but I've still got one". Geddit??? ;)

When it comes to having an indian my thought is if it dont make you sweat whats the point. I cant believe Korma tops the poll, it is the most useless Indian meal ever as it has no guts to it.

Saying that though there has been the odd occasion when I have bitten off more than I can handle in the hotness lol.

Couldn't agree more. Every so often I HAVE to have a phall. Theres something about profuse sweating and running eyes/nose (while trying REALLY hard not to get phall in your eyes!!) that makes it seem worthwhile.

As for korma topping the poll, I knew it would.

I offered to take about 10 people out for a Curry, 'banquet' night, any choice of courses from the menu, and a stunning night out, replies I got were :

1) Do they do 'English' food?
2) I don't want anything different.
3) Can't we go out for a burger e.t.c...

I shouldn't be shocked, this is The Fens (Lincolnshire) - about as close to Royston Vasey (League of Gentlemen) as you will get.

I was in the pub talking about take aways, and the bloke said 'Oh I love the ******, they make the best sirloin steak and chips'. This was a Chinese takeaway. After a bit of probing, I found out that the chap had NEVER had an 'ethnic' meal, despite using takeaways.

Crazy.

It's like if I went to India, I'd eat something mental. Something to make my head fall off. I wouldn't say to them 'excuse me, could you please make me some American style fries and a burger?'.

and another person voted for Dopiaza/Dupiaza - me! My favourite curry is actually a chicken Jalfrezi, but they're both similar in the oniony garlic stakes.

Belive it or not, I've never actually tried the legendary Phall. Although I like a bit of burn from time to time, I'm not into stockpiling anaesthetic haemarrhoid cream, just so I can got to the toilet without passing out from the pain.

Madras, balti, even the proverbial non curry CTM, Biryani, Dupiaza (extra onions) chicken favourite meat, but also vegetables are good. I love the Naan with bits of spicy meat in, I always want to call it keema Naan but it's not that.

Indian Takeaway is without doubt my favourite type of takewaway. Onion bhajis, yes. Yummy. Samosas. Also the poppadoms with that oniony salad, chutney and the red stuff.

Chicken Jalfrezi. I always keep a couple of onions in the fridge for use in homemade curries. If you were to pop round for tea, I'd cook you a chicken Quadpiaza with extra garlic and extra onions and extra chillies by the sounds of it.

Extra chips! said the Codfather.

NB - I only add half an onion per curry (me and girlfriend) two onions per curry would be obscene and off the scale of rational onioniinity (RO - SI unit)

Also onion breath is useful for scaring off chavs watching you play machines.

True, although the Dupiaza philosopy IMHO has always been 'add enough onion to make it comfortable, then add another one'.

Belive it or not, I've never actually tried the legendary Phall. Although I like a bit of burn from time to time, I'm not into stockpiling anaesthetic haemarrhoid cream, just so I can got to the toilet without passing out from the pain.

Can't say I blame you. The only reason I tried one was because I was pished and depressed and thought 'f*** it'. Actually came to appreciate it. I mean a curry that burns your lips while you eat it, fantastic :D

Madras, balti, even the proverbial non curry CTM, Biryani, Dupiaza (extra onions) chicken favourite meat, but also vegetables are good. I love the Naan with bits of spicy meat in, I always want to call it keema Naan but it's not that.

Not sure which one that is. Even though most of the stuff I eat is fairly garlicy, I do often do Garlic Naan on the side.

Indian Takeaway is without doubt my favourite type of takewaway. Onion bhajis, yes. Yummy. Samosas. Also the poppadoms with that oniony salad, chutney and the red stuff.

Definately. About 4 years ago it would have been pizza. Now it's got to be Curry. When you look at the insignificant price difference, if nothing else it's much better value for money. I agree with mum and dad - pizza is 'glorified cheese on toast'. Chinese is also a bit bland. I still love a good chinese, but it's so... 'samey'. That and the fact my local Indian give me free poppadoms and pickle (well, mango chutney and a pot of diced raw onion (they've come to realise I hate the cucumber and I just get raw onion now :D))

Chicken Jalfrezi. I always keep a couple of onions in the fridge for use in homemade curries. If you were to pop round for tea, I'd cook you a chicken Quadpiaza with extra garlic and extra onions and extra chillies by the sounds of it.

Definately. In fact if you are anything like me, you'll have got to the 'adding chopped onion', BUT also blending a whole onion into your tomato curry base stage - something I also do with my Chilli :D

NB - I only add half an onion per curry (me and girlfriend) two onions per curry would be obscene and off the scale of rational onioniinity (RO - SI unit)

Possibly. Takes a fair bit to scare me!

Also onion breath is useful for scaring off chavs watching you play machines.

DEFINATELY. In fact it keeps most people away, which suits me to a tee.

LOL, I can post more about Curry if you like.

I went for one recently in my work uniform, BIG mistake when you walk out and it says 'www.currys.co.uk' across the back of your shirt. Cue everyone thinking they are the wittiest thing going :D

I'm with Nudgeman, Jalfrezi every time for me, always ask for 2-4 chillis though as some places can go ott; once in Leicester square had a jalfraezi which had precisely 4 small pieces of chicken and about 100 small chillies all chopped in half along the length, it was inedible (for me anyway, I like a bit of a kick but...) and it was v expensive presumably because of location.

Oh and did you know that dopiaza or dupiaza means twice cooked? I have a recipe at home which comes out very near the real deal, I can post it if you like?

IMHO the key to authentic indian curry cooking at home is fresh spices and cooking the onions properly.

Anyone tried cooking onion bhajis? I made a right mess of my deep fat fryer trying that one!

I'm partial to a Masala generally Lamb Tikka.

Our local (Spice Traders) do the best indian i have ever had, i've eaten indians in some of the better known resturants in london and they dont touch our local.

The masala arrives in the plastic "Dont microwave me" tray with a swirl of cream in the top and its to die for.

Unlike others when i have indian i ALWAYS have the same thing

Sheek Kebab starter - Comes with Side Salad + Mint Sauce
Lamb Tikka Masala
Pilou Rice
Keema Naan
Extra Mint Sauce - To Dip Naan in

Goes well with chips too.

It's gotta be Lamb Tikka Jalfrezi (although Jalfrezi can be spelt a number of ways). I find it usually has a lot more taste, but the same heat as a Madras. However there is a chain called Aagrah round us which serves their Jalfrezis with egg - not really my scene. It is not a problem though, because their Lamb Hyderabadi is to die for. This is a medium strength curry, but is lovely and flavourful. Mmmm - I'm drooling just thinking about it.

I love hot curries (Chicken Ticka Chilli Bhoona, extra chillies) but you know that no matter how hot it tastes going in, it'll always get twice as hot coming out.

Anyone got any suggestions on how to reduce this heat? My own suggestion is placing the toilet roll in the freezer as soon as you come back from the indians.

Apologies, the system only allows 10 answers per Poll, and I totally forgot about Jalfrezi.

I may make an amended one at some point, obviously noone on here is into the Persian curry stuff?

(EDIT - wait, one person voted Dansak, which is nice :) )

TBH I knew that Korma would win anyway. Bloody stuff. Reminds me of sweetened vomit from someone who has overdosed on coconut milk.

Excuse me everyone but it looks like a combination of sick and cum...I think they $&%# into the pot in the kitchen. Korma, while not totally vile tasting, certainly looks like a pile of sick...and it CERTAINLY shouldn't be classified as a curry. :)

Any recipes much appreciated.

Just remember onions are good for you. They are full of free radicals that will soak up any carcinogenic factors. Garlic is good to. As far insanely hot Jalfreziiiiis, well Cambridge holds the record for that one. Coventry Jalfrezi is within respectable limits. It seems though that in some places Jalfrezi is as hot as Vindaloo. It's rather strange as I thought they just pumped the stuff up through giant pipes from one communal curry pot in the centre of the earth.
