I recently built my own pc,specs as follows
Processor Intel dual core E6600 2.40GHZ
Mother board A-bit AW9D MAX
memory 3gig OCZ GOLD 800 MGZ
Graphics Gigabyte ati radeon X800XL 512MB
Power supply Seasonic 700w
Seagate barracuda sata 2 80gig hard drive (for vista)
seagate barracuda sata 2 200gig hard drive (for mp3's and pics)
seagate barracuda sata 2 500gig hard drive (for games and programmes)
plextor sata 2 dvd re-writer
samsung sata 2 dvd re-writer
Windows vista ultimate (Full Edition)
I have had very few problems and if you think back when windows xp was released that too had simular problems but give vista time and i think vista will be far superior, vista boots up and shuts down faster than xp.
Vista is a good operating system and once they release a service pack disk it will be better and some of the blame has to be with the people who make the hardware for being slow releasing up to date drivers
Vista or XP

I've been using Vista since it's release and haven't had any problems with it. I've got the Ultimate edition and run Media Center through to my TV via a connection through my Xbox 360. I haven't had any problems with software not running and I'm just waiting for one more driver for my Netgear SC101.
As regards Linux, I'd never use it as a desktop system as it's got no appeal and nothing much to offer apart from some GPL software which I can do without. Linux for me will always shine in a server environment and leaves Windows for dust in this department.

'that's a problem' (apostrophe police)
Not such much a problem as a minor inconvenience. I just run it as a shared drive through a Windows XP PC I have when I need it. I would consider a problem as regular crashing or locking up.
