has anyone else had trouble i starting up a protected home network?

how hard can it be? you tell the router what type of secure network you want (ie. shared or wpa-aes/tdik or whatever), specify a password, press apply and then use that key pharase or 10 digit mac number on the pc you wish to gain wireless access and go..

6 hours.. 6 bloody hours i finally gave up, removed the security and resorted to blocking the mac address of the offending leechers.

any help people?

I bought a Belkin router last summer so I could have wireless on my laptop and I was told it was simple to set up but I couldnt do it for love nor money. I had a couple of go's but in the end I gave up

In the end a mate who's doing computer science at uni sorted it for me.

i've had all sorts of problems with belkin routers. so i gave up and got a netgear one instead (came with free usb adaptor aswell... nice)

not had a problem with it yet and wired is 100mbps and wireless 108mbps.
easy to set up a web server aswell.

easy to set up aswell and comes with quick start guide and useful manual cd-rom.

hope this helps!

Belkin is the bollocks..... 3 years and no probs

Rookies and wireless do not match up.... no offence.

How are you connected and to what??? Im using a fs07634 2.4Ghz hard wired to my mac mini, wireless to my pc and wireless to xbox live. The only thing not wired to it is my wife.....

Anyways ditching pc soon as just installed xp on my gleaming new intel duo mac via bootcamp..... fastest pc you will ever see for £500

give us a shout if your stuck

Ok, used to work for BT Yahoo tec support in Derby & the amounts of problems we have had with customers using Belkin equipment are through the roof, ovaly complicated to calibrate, & terrible customer support, not even noting my own personal experiences trying to sort out an NTL connection with 1 for my ex's mum which took me TWO HOURS to get a wireless connection running, compared to 5 mins with my 3com @ my flat, and 3 mins with the BT Voyager 2110 @ mums (BTW, BT Voyager routers are near enough all re-branded Dynalink routers, with the odd one made by 2-wire).

All I can say bud is for god sake DO NOT use the auto install program CD ROM as I have learned, just use the router's IP address in a normal web browser & hand calibrate what you need, and also stick to Windows Wireless Zero Config rather than use the prog that came with your wireless adaptor unless it's an Intel adaptor you are dealing with (Which in that case disable zero wireless zero config).

If you can afford to do so get a BT Voyager from this fantastic seller on e-bay who I have delt with before (2091 version for ADSL, 1500 for cable): eBay UK Shop - Puzbie's Emporium: wireless adsl, wireless router, bt voyager

HI

I have just got a nice unbranded router for 20 quid on e-bay and I opennd the box, plugged in the NTL modem and then connected to the PC turned on the modem, router, pc, set up wireless security in the router config, made sure that the cable modem was being detected by the router, setup my PSP and i can now surf on the PC and PSP and soon the other half will be able to browes on her laptop. The only hardish part was getting the repro server to work but that only took me an hour or so to figure out.

thanks for all your help guys.

what annoys me is that ive used computers for some 20 years, and im a dab had at this and that.. so with this in mind, i protected my network to the letter using either a shared key, 64-bit or 128-bit encryption to the letter and doing the same on the wireless pc it is connected to... nothing, limited or no connectivity. eventually ofter many many hours of doing `the same thing` the computer started to talk to the belkin home wireless network, but i could not get the 2nd computer to work. its almost like the belkin router forgets is settings, even after a reboot.

i had to learn about lans and networking the hard way, when a friend installed a network but the cable one end was naff, so i read books upon book on how to install a netwrk, eventually i found the answer and corrected the cable with the help of a 19.99 pair of network grips and a 9.99 bag of network clips.

AAAAGGGHHH

as i type this, my network connections fold has just gone blank! WTF? the 1394, bluetooth, LAN and wireless network icons have dissapeared! what the hell is going on here? HELP?

Nails,

Don't think your alone on this, being in the trade so to speak and the amount of requests I get to help out with wireless networks you would not believe.

There either as easy as pie or god darn pain in the arse!

Usual method is never use the supplied software its usually way out of date and just puts crap on your machine.

Always flash the firmware to the latest release before you even start.

Then start simple and work upwards i.e. No security check connection, then step up and turn on security until you finally lock it down to your requirements.

Good luck and I feel your pain!

took me 10mins to setup my wireless with a belkin router.

using 128bit encryption i simply created a key, set the key up on each network card on the network. et voila. fully working encrypted network.

I swapped to wireless from a cable network and tbh i h8 it. wireless is meant for taxis not home networking.

It works tho and i surf, download and play online games fine (albeit with a higher ping).

All I would suggest is to persist because you will at the very least learn something new. Also its not belkin hardware thats the problem its the people who use it.

Only £500 jackpot on Little Devils which I got waiting for a Rainbow Riches (£70) feature to end. Then I got £210 on the feature on Rainbow Riches. My mrs was happy that day!
