Hi all,
I am hoping someone will be able to help with a problem my mums computer has developed.
The computer boots up to the xp welcome screen fine but does not pick up the keyboard or the mouse so she is unable to do anything on it.
I have tried my wired mouse on it but to no avail.
Any ideas folks?

Hi mate, I m not sure what you mean.
It does have usb's and the mouse and keyboard are wireless. I tried my mouse directly into the green mouse port but it still didnt work.
Hope that helps but Im far from a computer whizz lol.

Ok np.
http://www.freeclix..../photo_data.jpg USB connection

Provided from what you say it sounds like they are PS2..I would just switch comp off unplug them from back of pc plug them back in..reboot..should recognise them.

Sorry mate I had to go out so I aint been on my comp. My mum has taken it to a shop while I was out so will probably be charged £50 for them to do something really easy.
Thanks anyway.

freaky, after a new install to make my network connection appear again, the computer also refused to regognise the mouse or keyboard.. 6 reboots later it eventually came on.
since i couldnt get the keyboard to work, i couldnt press delete to get into the bios.. but like i say, it eventually just came back.

Maybe the drivers were corrupted, or the batteries could have run out if they were wireless devices. Try removing the drivers and re-installing them using the software CD or floppy provided if there is one.

My mum got it back from the shop. He said it was a virus that had disabled the bios or summat.

I was gonna mention the BIOS actually to say to go in and make sure everything was OK with it..but messing about in the BIOS if your unsure of what your doing can have dire consequences.
Glad she got it sorted anyway..but next time tell her not to be so hasty in taking it to a shop theres plenty of knowlegable folks on here(not including myself obv) that will be willing to help you out im sure..they have helped me out a shitehole many a time..after all no point paying cash when its a 2 minute job to sort it yourself.

Must admit neither have I??
I have had some issues recently with new Dell machines not picking up any other KB/Mouse other than the one shipped with the box. That was more of a firmware issue though....
One thing to try running on your machine no matter what would be
SUPERAntiSpyware.com - AntiAdware, AntiSpyware, AntiMalware!
we rolled out a dedicated spyware server at the company I work for etc etc....and have actually found that the above product works a million times better. Even down to rootkit level....
The title is a little off putting I must admit though, hehe usually products called super this and that tend to contain more spyware and do more harm than good.
That one is very good though.....

Maybe it had affected other things aswell but as the kb and mouse were not working we could not get onto the computer to find out.
Most of the software that was installed on it has been wiped off so I presume all he did was clear the comp back to its original state when purchased. Pics and that were saved though as he moved them to the d drive.

Problem is if you could not even use the KB / mouse then no way in hell could you even boot to safe mode.
Have to admit though this has been 1 strange & very infuriating virus to lock out the BIOS though.

I wish I had gone with my mum now when she picked it up so I could have asked him what was actually wrong with it.

Would require removing the battery for a min then replacing it which clears the bios. Then it would take switching the pc on and going into the bios to put the settings back or using default settings. Simple if you know how ,dodgy if you don't.
