Hi all, just wondered how long the backup battery lasts in a fruit machine.

My machine only gets used a couple of times a month so its switched off most of the time, not had any probs so far but I am a bit worried that leaving it off for too long may drain the battery and mess up the memory etc.

Any thoughts !!.

I doubt theres any set time for a battery lifespan. It all depends on make and model.

I use nicad batteries in my trade and they are checked each and every year and to be honest, I've found some that die within a single year yet other models of battery have and are lasting in excess of 10 years. Yet the old firm I worked for would change them when they were 5 years old even if they were working and passed all the load tests ect...

My machine at home was produced in 1991 and I'm under the impression the battery has never been changed. It's still working fine.

PC back-up batteries are the same. Some last a year or two, others several years. So to be honest, theres no specified life-span for a battery. Although the wait til it dies method may seem ok, if the battery leaks, it could cause much more damage than swapping it at specified intervals.

you should at least have the machine on about 7 days in a month and the battery should last years.

Thanks, I was actually wanting info on how long a machine can be left switched off before the battery drains and loses its hopper level/state of play etc. I know it will differ between machines depending on battery size etc , mine may be left off for up to 3 weeks at a time, whats the worst that can happen if the battery does drain completely after a long period of inactivity ?.

That works out at 1 day in every 4, It doesnt get anywhere near that much use. It does get left on for about 8 hrs every time its used so it gets quite a good charge .

machine can be left off for long periods but obviously the older the machine the less time you can keep it off.

we have taken a cops and robbers off site, kept it in our store for say a year and the battery is still ok.

what will happen if you have a dead battery is either an alarm will sound if its an older machine or if its a hopper based machine then the the machine wont keep its hopper level or volume setting every time you switch it on/off.
