Is there a document that describes the file format of the DX files? I made a very minor change to a layout that I wouldn't have expected to alter the file size in any way but it increased the size by 23 bytes.

I've been rummaging inside the MFME 9.4 binary too. There's some interesting stuff in there. Was the source code ever released?
