My recollection of fruit machines goes back over 30 years, to the days of the 1p machines. I remember the first 27-way feature, by getting 3 red 'strike' symbols in view. The machine had an open display (as far as I recall) of 10p and 1p coins. Rapid flashing lights alternated between silver (10p win) and bronze (4p win).
I presume that it was 'true skill' as my sister had a system of tapping her feet on the floor in time with the flashing lights and always seem to get the 10p jackpot!

I also recall dropping 1p coins into 4 individual slots at the top of a machine to try and slid the coins into a slot to light up 4 cherries at the top of the machine, or plums, melons or bells.

Another machine involved a circluar disc spinning round with various colour horses on it. I enjoyed this, along with the red/blue/green/yellow/white car race and the roulette wheel. All jackpots at this point were 10p for a 1p stake!
