Just to be clear epee never was and never will be.

Just to be clear, epee absolutely was, but never will be. << fixed that for you ;)

Trust me - I know these things ;)

Edit: Reply got cut off, was going to say to Guitar: you have a very shrewd overview of the whole picture, and quite spot on I believe. Chris was far from "being a gent" in much of what went on, although credit is due where due. Also, your assessment of epee/epoch is spot on. As to an emulator appearing, time will tell I guess, but as you've correctly surmised, it's not straightforward unfortunately :( At least there's no security issues preventing emulation (that I know) - which is more than can be said for the current techs in use.

thats what i was wondering crazybar...i spend most of my time..pinching sound OFF..so as to make ringtones etc..

if i knew how to put them ON..then quite a few (made up)..themed ems could be made..

(samples could be taken from almost anything nowadays)

I wrote the tool used to do this several years ago - and that's precisely the reason I never released it !! I can't imagine anything worse than taking a godawful game, changing the art and sound, and presenting it as a new (albeit custom) "emulated" game. Shit, why sink to the same level as some manufacturers appear to do with their own games!!!! LOL

Anyway, I'm sure the tool is likely to be circulating under the counter somewhere or other - no doubt someone will supply it to you. Alternatively, I think you can provide your own WAV files using bfemu for scorpion 2 machines, and perhaps the same is even possible in FMEF? Guitar would have to confirm/deny that though, as I don't have a clue!

In Topic: MFME10.1a

09 September 2009 - 10:27 PM

Just playing the new Casino Monopoly by HTS and my Comodo Firewall just prompted me that MFME101a is trying to access the internet using 224.0.0.22 - IGMP.

Never had that message before - Googled it and cannot see anything dodgy out of it.

Anyone else?

bj

Based on the actual MFME source code, this is impossible.

First of all, 224.0.0.x is reserved for multicast requests. An IGMP request on one of these addresses is most likely to some sort of multimedia server (like a LAN-based media server / WebTV server or similar - many LAN-based external HDDs would use such a protocol). If you have such a system set up somewhere on your LAN, then it could be that opening a layout was trying to make a discovery request across your LAN to see what shared drives were available for instance. This is OK. If you don't have one of these (or drivers for one), then I'd be highly suspicious that your copy has somehow become "infected" with some sort of malware or whatever.

Best way to check for sure is to compare the checksum on the mfme.exe file. 10.1a has the following checksum (on my system anyway):

CRC32: 65c62e68
MD5: 68b459b24616b5eb424efebdb34f7236

In Topic: What stings more times?

09 September 2009 - 07:38 PM

Its a question that i always thought had a obvious answer, but after watching QI im now in doubt. That is what stings more times a bee or a wasp? i always thought that a bee can sting you once and that a wasp can continuously sting you. As once a bee stings you its stinger gets pulled out, unlike the wasp. BUT according to QI this doesn't seem to be the case.

QI (as ever) is absolutely correct...

Worker Honey Bees can only sting once (esp. North American Honey Bees) when stinging mammals or birds - when stinging other species (such as other bees), they can withdraw their stings and reuse them. There are many types of bee however, and it is only the Honey Bee that has this barbed sting. Bumble Bees (as an example) do not have barbed stings, and therefore can sting many times, although as they are generally less aggressive, it's less likely that you'll be stung by one in any case.

Wasps by contrast can usually sting many times, as they do not have a barbed sting (esp. the European Wasp and Paper Wasp). Yellowjackets are thought to sting only once as their stings are barbed, but this is often not the case. They do sometimes leave their stings behind which continue to pump venom into the victim, but I'm not sure if that kills them like with bees.
